EAGLES OPEN 2010-11 CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE RAMBLERS: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team opens the 2010-11 campaign with a non-conference tilt Friday, Nov. 12, versus Loyola University-Chicago. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. Veteran broadcaster Dan Gutowsky will have the exclusive call on Eagle All-Access beginning at 6:55 p.m.
ALL-TIME IN SEASON LID LIFTERS: The Nov. 12 contest versus Loyola-Chicago marks the start of Eastern Michigan University's 35th year of women's basketball which began in 1976-77. The Eagles' first-ever collegiate contest since the school began offering scholarships was a 63-53 setback to the University of Michigan, Jan. 11, 1977.
All-time the Eagles are 21-13 in season lid lifters, including winning eight of their last nine openers dating back to a 82-67 victory over Cornell University, Nov. 16, 2001, at the Convocation Center.
APPROACHING 1,000: Junior Cassie Schrock has scored 977 points in her career and ranks 19th all time. There are currently 15 players in the 1,000-point club for EMU women's basketball.
EMU VERSUS THE HORIZON LEAGUE: Eastern is 46-31 all-time versus the Indianapolis, Ind. based conference, having played against all 10 member institutions. EMU has faced the University of Detroit Mercy more times than any other league member, with the Titans holding an 11-8 lead in the series.
EMU VERSUS LOYOLA: The Eagles and Ramblers are squaring off for the fifth time with Eastern Michigan holding a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series. The meeting will be the first since 1998, when Eastern posted a 77-67 victory at the Convocation Center, Dec. 29. Loyola won the first meetings to open the series in 1989 before EMU notched wins in 1990 and 1997.
EMU AND THE HOME OPENER: Friday's, Nov. 12, home opener versus Loyola marks the 13th season of EMU women's basketball at the Convocation Center. The Eagles are 10-2 all-time in season openers at the Convo, including winning the last 10 home lid lifters dating back to a 79-53 victory over Chicago State University, Nov. 17, 2000. During the winning streak, EMU is winning the home opener by an average of 37 points (EMU 85.1, OPP 48.1).
THIS DATE IN EMU HISTORY: The game on Nov. 12 will mark the first time the Eagles will have played on that date. Eastern has played twice previously on Nov. 11, posting a 1-1 record, and once on Nov. 13, a 61-49 victory over Illinois-Chicago in 2009.
BUCKEYES ON THE HORIZON: Following Friday's game the Eagles will travel to Columbus, Ohio for a Sunday, Nov. 14, matinee against the nationally ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State University. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Value City Arena inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The game will be televised via The Big Ten Network's website.
The Buckeyes, who are ranked No. 7 in both the preseason Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls, recorded 31 wins, a sixth straight Big Ten regular season and second straight tournament title. last season. OSU is led by Jantel Lavender, who became the first Buckeye to score 2,000 points in her junior season, won Big Ten Player of the Year honors for the third year in a row and was the Big Ten tournament's most outstanding player after setting a tournament championship game record with 35 points in the win over Iowa. She has scored in double figures in all 102 career games, the longest active streak in the nation entering the 2010-11 season.
GILBERT VERSUS THE BIG TEN: For the second time since Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's arrival, the Eagles will take on a team from the Big Ten Conference. EMU is 10-35 all-time versus the Park Ridge, Ill. based conference, but the Green and White are 4-6 against Big Ten foes since the 2000-01 campaign. During that span, Eastern Michigan has posted wins over Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Northwestern, with losses coming against Purdue, Illinois, Indiana and MSU.
TOP-25 OPPOSITION AND THE EAGLES: For the first time this season, Eastern Michigan will square off with a ranked team when it tangles with No. 7 Ohio State University Sunday, Nov. 14. The Eagles hold a 196-268 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in nine of the last 10 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 24-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-43. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 67 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 17.
