HONOLULU, Hawai'i (EMUEagles.com)
– Behind 44 combined points from Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) and coupled with solid bench play, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team claimed an 83-67 road victory over host University of Hawai'i at Manoa in the second of three games in the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center, Saturday, Nov. 20.

EMU dominated from start to finish, recording 18 steals and forcing the Rainbow Wahine into 23 miscues that resulted in 34 points for the Eagles in the contest. James and Huntley combined to go 16-for-33 from the field as each recorded season-highs with 21 and 23 points, respectively.

With the win, EMU evens its record at 2-2 on the season while Hawai'i drops to 1-1.

In the midst of three ties and 10 lead changes in the first half, the Eagles finally began to pull away midway through, putting together a 9-0 run capped off by a fast break pull-up jumper by Huntley to give the Eagles a 23-15 lead with 8:35 to go in the opening frame.

Hawai'i looked to take the wind out of EMU's sails as it forced EMU's three leading post players into foul trouble with Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) recording three fouls and Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Hillsborough CC) and India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) with two each. However, it was Chelsea Hite (Ligonier, Ind.-West Noble) who came off the bench to contribute solid early game minutes to keep the momentum alive for the Eagles. Hite finished with four points and two rebounds while Hairston trumped her career-high rebounding performance with a eight caroms on Saturday.

The first half lead would swell to as many as 13 points while an 11-4 run to close out the half gave the energized Eagles a 44-31 lead into the break. Huntley led the Green and White with a game-high 18 first half points while James tallied 10.

The Eagles went on a 12-5 run and built a 20-point lead within the first four minutes of the second half after James knocked down her second three-pointer of the contest to give EMU a 56-36 advantage.

The Rainbow Wahine then strung together a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 12 points at 60-48 before the Eagles responded with a 15-5 run of their own to push the lead back to 20 points with just under six minutes to play to put the game out of reach.

EMU out-rebounded the Rainbow Wahine, 46-38, while its bench outscored the host bench, 28-17.

The Eagles will be back in action for the tournament finale against the Cal State Northridge Matadors tomorrow Sunday, Nov. 21. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. HAST.
