Box score.
HONOLULU, Hawai'i (EMUEagles.com) – Despite a night in which senior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) reached a milestone by recording her 1,000th career point, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell to the Oregon State University Beavers, 59-44, in the first-ever meeting between both teams in the opening game of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic hosted by the University of Hawai'I at Manoa Friday, Nov. 19.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 1-2 on the young season while the Beavers move to 2-0.
Schrock entered the game needing just one point to reach the coveted milestone and accomplished the feat early on, penetrating into the lane and converting EMU's first field goal of the game at the 16:06 mark of the first half. Schrock totaled seven points, seven rebounds and six assists, becoming the 16th member to join the 1,000-point club for the EMU women's basketball program.
The Eagles started out slow in each half, but the difference in the game was their inability to turn it on in the second half, shooting just 21.4 percent (6-for-28) from the field while the Beavers converted 11-of-26 second half field goals to overcome a two-point halftime deficit.
EMU was led by India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) who recorded a career-high 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half, on 6-of-11 shooting off the bench. She also ripped down a career-high six rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
Juniors Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) dealt with foul trouble for the majority of the first half and combined to score just 10 points in the losing effort. Oregon State's Sage Indendi recorded a game-high 14 points on 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from downtown.
After a sluggish start, the Eagles slowly began to build momentum throughout the first half. Sophomore forward Hairston led all scorers with 10 first half points on 5-for-8 shooting. With the Eagles trailing, 9-7, she scored two straight baskets to give the Eagles their first lead of the game at the 11:35 mark and then sparked a 13-0 run that ran the lead to 20-9.
Oregon State then answered with a 9-0 run of their own, recording three consecutive three-point baskets. With 3:41 left in the first half, the Beavers tied the game at 22-apiece on a made jump shot by Indendi, who led OSU with eight first half points. The Eagles took a 26-24 lead into halftime.
Out of the break, the Beavers went on an 18-4 run to build their biggest lead of the game of 12 points while the Eagles missed nine of their first 10 shots in the half. That prompted EMU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert to call a timeout with just over 12 and a half minutes left in the game. Alexis Bostick and Indendi combined to hit four three-point baskets during the run which EMU could not recover from.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 22, when they take on host Hawai'I in a 3 p.m. HAST tilt at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
