Eagles Fall in Four to Bobcats

After winning the first set, EMU drops three straight

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team came up short here, Saturday, Oct. 30, pushing Ohio University to four matches before falling 3-1. The Eagles won the first set 25-23, but the Bobcats proved to be too much, winning the next three sets 24-26, 20-25 and 19-25 to take the match.
With the loss the Eagles drop 22-7 (9-3 Mid-American Conference) on the season, while the Bobcats improves to 15-10 (7-5 MAC).
The Eagles got off to a strong start, winning the first set 25-23. Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) led the Green and White with seven kills and one block in the opening frame. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio- Lake Catholic) finished the set with 13 assists. The Eagles posted a .244 attack percentage compared to Ohio's .171.
The Bobcats would answer the Eagles victory by winning the second and third sets, notching 26-24 and 25-20 wins, respectively. Ohio was able to record 16 kills to EMU's 12 during the second set. Errors plagued the Eagles throughout the match as Eastern posted six attack errors and two service errors. That trend continued into the third set as EMU recorded eight errors in that frame. The Green and White took the lead early, but after a consecutive kills from the Bobcats the Eagles were never able to recover losing 25-20.
The fourth set, and ultimately the decisive set, went to the Bobcats, 25-19. The Eagles posted just a .199 attack percentage (52-156), recording 56 digs for the match. Swartz led the the Green and White with 12 kills, five digs and two block assists. Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) finished the match with 10 kills and eight digs. Mason recorded a team-best 45 assists and six digs.
The Eagles will return home after four straight games away from the Convocation Center. The team will hit the court on Friday, Nov. 5 versus Ball State, and Saturday, Nov. 6 versus Toledo to close out their home schedule. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
