YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The battle of the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference West Division lived up to its billing as a thriller, but the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team could not outlast the Ball State University Cardinals, dropping a five-set contest, 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 7-15), here at the Convocation Center Friday, Nov. 15.
The Eagles fall to 22-8 (9-4 MAC) on the season while the Cardinals push to 21-4 (11-2, MAC) and take a commanding two-game lead in the West Division with just three regular season games remaining.
Eastern was led by outside hitters Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame) and Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child). Each player posted a double-double by recording 18 digs and 18 kills apiece. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) led the team with 64 assists, while Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio) hit for an outstanding .538 kill percentage (15-for-26).
In the first set, EMU jumped on the Cardinals out the gate, storming to a 25-16 set victory. The Eagles staged an 11-5 lead on four Iaquaniello kills. She finished with a set-high eight kills and 20 total attacks. The Cardinals closed the gap to 12-8 before the Eagles rallied off five straight points on their way to a nine-point victory.
EMU jumped out to another lead in the second set, scoring four of the first five points, but Ball State withstood 10 ties and six lead changes to roar back and tie the match at one set apiece with the 25-22 set win. The Cardinals used a balanced offensive attack despite a set-best eight kills from Roback. BSU's Kylee Baker posted five kills while four others recorded multiple kills in the set for the Cardinals. Brittany McGinnis added 14 of her team-high 53 assists as well.
After the intermission, EMU came out for its best set of the match by posting an astounding .469 (19-for-32) team hitting percentage with six Eagles totaling two or more kills in the 25-16 set victory. Iaquaniello, Roback and Short each posted four kills in the set while Mason dished out 16 assists en route to a match-high 64 helpers.
The fourth set was a seesaw battle that saw the teams tie at 15 points apiece. They exchanged points before the Cardinals took a 22-19 advantage on a kill by Whitney Heeres. The Eagles were unable to rebound and fell 25-23 to set up a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, the Eagles came out flat-footed and quickly fell to a 10-6 deficit before Head Coach Kim Berrington called an EMU timeout. It was ineffective, however, as the Cardinals rallied off five of the next six points for the 15-7 fifth-set win, clinching a season series sweep of the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan returns to the court Saturday, Nov. 6, to take on rival Toledo at the Convocation Center. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
