MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –– Despite as sluggish start, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team upended Central Michigan University, 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 26-16, 18-25, 15-12), here Thursday night, Oct. 28, in Mid-American Conference action at Finch Fieldhouse. Senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) and sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) combined for 24 of the team's 55 kills during the five-set victory.

With the win the Eagles up their record to 22-6 (9-2 MAC) and still remain within striking distance of MAC West Division leader Northern Illinois University. The Huskies, who play the University of Toledo Friday, Oct. 29, are 9-1 in league play after winning nine consecutive matches. On the other side of the court Central Michigan drops to 11-12 (5-6 MAC) after being selected the preseason favorite to capture the division crown.

The Eagles were led by Iaquaniello with her ninth double-double of the season, notching 13 kills and 16 digs. Swartz's red-hot play continued by recording 11 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) and freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) each added nine kills as the team hit a respectable .179, despite a first set that saw the Green and White post more attack errors than kills.

Kaitlyn Schultz managed a match-best 16 kills on the evening for the Chippewas with teammate Val DeWeerd finishing with 15 put-a-ways. Lauren Krupsky was the third CMU player with double digits in kills, but keeping the ball in play plagued the Maroon and Gold. CMU finished the night with 30 attack errors and nine service errors.

Eastern struggled out of the gates in the opening set, falling 25-18. However, Head Coach Kim Berrington was able to get her team to regroup and take sets two and three by a scores of 25-20 and 25-16. The Chippewas would come back with a 25-18 decision to force the all-important fifth frame.

In the finale that featured 10 ties and five lead changes, Central pulled out to a quick 3-1 edge. Eastern would knot the score a 3-3, as the lead would teeter back-and fourth with neither side able to gain more than a point advantage.

With the score tied at 12-12, CMU's Lindsay Dulude powered home a kill to give the home team the lead and force EMU to burn a timeout. Out of the break an attack error by Dulide again knotted the score at 13. A kill by junior libero Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) gave the Eagles the lead back and on the very next play EMU was able to seal the victory with a block by Baker and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) for match point in the fifth set.

The Green and White remain on the road Saturday, Oct. 30, traveling to Athens, Ohio to battle Ohio University, the defending MAC Tournament champions, First serve is schedule for 7 p.m. at the OU Convocation Center.
