Box score.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) –– The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team picked up its 20th victory of the 2010 campaign Friday night, Oct. 22, as the hot-hitting Eagles downed the University at Buffalo, 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-8), at Alumni Arena. The win marks the 10th time in the program's 35-year history that EMU has posted at least 20 wins in a season.
With the decision the Eagles improve to 20-6 on the campaign and 7-2 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Bulls fall to 14-11 (2-7 MAC).
Senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) paced the offensive attack for the Green and White with 14 kills and a .407 hitting percentage (14-3-27). Freshman Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) followed with 11 kills, three digs and two block assists on the night. Junior Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) pulled up 23 digs, while junior Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) chipped in 43 set assists.
Buffalo's Kristin Bignell led the way with 11 kills and just two errors, while Marisa Hornbaker and Kayla Govier added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Freshman Dana Musil also had nine kills, while Abby Niekamp added eight. Senior Lindsey Schlegel had 28 assists, while freshman Dani Reinert finished with 19. It was serving that plagued the Bulls as well as UB recorded 12 service errors, opposed to just three aces.
The Eagles hit .316 while the Bulls hit just .145 for the contest.
The first set was tight through out as the teams traded back the lead, but with things tied at 19-19 the Eagles picked up two straight points to take a 21-19 lead. The Bulls continued to fight to get back within one, 22-21, but the Eagles scored the last three points of the set to take the set 25-21. The Eagles hit .400 in the second set, which they won 25-19.
UB fought back after the break and led throughout the entire third set. UB led 15-11 when EMU tied things up at 15-15. The Bulls responded with four straight points to take a 19-15 lead. The Eagles would get it tied at 23-23, but the Bulls would score the final two points to take the set.
The momentum was short lived for UB as Eastern Michigan hit .583 as a team in the fourth set, while the Bulls struggled to find the floor, hitting -.029. The eight points scored in the set tied a season-low against the Eagles, as Prairie View managed the same total in the third frame of the season-opner at the Sam Houston State University Tournament, Aug. 27.
EMU is back in action tomorrow night when it travels to the University of Akron. The match begins at 7 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena on the Akron campus.
