Volleyball Escapes Akron with a 3-2 Victory

Eagles down the MAC East leading Zips in five sets

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –– The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team stretched its winning streak to four straight with a 3-2 victory (21-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-20, 15-13) over the University of Akron Saturday night, Oct. 23, in Mid-American Conference action at James A. Rhodes Arena.
With the decision the Eagles improve to 21-6 on the campaign and 8-2 in the MAC, while the MAC East leading Zips fall to 13-9 (5-5 MAC).
Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) paced the offensive attack for the Green and White with 18 kills and a .302 hitting percentage (18-5-43) to go along with 14 digs. Senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) followed with 13 kills to go along with 10 from freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy).
Three Zips posted a double-double on the night including Courtney Jarvis who had a team leading 18 kills to go along with 17 digs. Freshman Alex Cocklin posted 15 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore setter Morgan Kuhn grabbed 61 assists and 10 digs.
A back-and-fourth match that saw the teams exchange set victories, the Eagles found themselves heading to their sixth fifth set of the season. The Zips world jump out to the 8-4 advantage, however, a pair of Akron miscues would allow the Eagles close keep within a pair, 8-6.
Still holding the slim two-point cushion, a service error by the Zips pulled the Green and White to within a point. at 12-11. A kill saw UA go back up two , 13-11, but two consecutive errors knotted the set at 13. Akron would burn a timeout to regain momentum, but it would prove all for naught.
Roback would power home back-to-back kills to seal the 15-13 decision and match win.
Eastern Michigan remains on the road next weekend with a road swing to battle instate rival Central Michigan University Thursday, Oct. 28, before playing Ohio University Saturday, Oct. 30. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
