YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- After a lengthy home stand, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team hits the road for five consecutive Mid-American Conference cross-divisional matches. EMU travels to the University at Buffalo, Oct. 22, before battling the University of Akron Saturday, Oct. 23. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
With eight matches still remaining in the regular season, the Eagles are locked in a three-way tie with Ball State and Western Michigan for second place in the MAC West Division with a 6-2 record. Northern Illinois sits atop the division with a 7-1 mark.
REMAINING WHITE-HOT: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team is off to a sensational start to the 2010 campaign with a 19-6 record, that includes winning 62 of its 89 sets played. EMU's 19-6 start is the program's best since the 2003 campaign when the Green and White notched an 19-6 record through its first 25 matches. The 6-2 start to Mid-American Conference play is also the squad's best since the 2005 season.
LARGEST TURNAROUND IN SCHOOL HISTORY: The 14-game improvement from five wins in 2009 to the 19 victories this season the largest in school history. The previous standard of a 12-game turnaround came during the 1990 campaign, when the Eagles went from 18 victories to 30 wins, and again in 2001, when EMU went from seven wins to 19. The 1993 team posted a 10-game improvement and the 1999 squad finished with a nine-game improvement.
EASTERN LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK VERSUS BUFFALO: After dropping its first-ever match to the University at Buffalo in 2009, the Eagles hope to right the ship versus the Bulls this season. Prior to last season, EMU had won all 13 meetings in the series versus the Bulls dating back to Aug. 31, 1996, when the Green and White first notched a 3-2 win in the opening match of the UB Tournament at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. However, last season Buffalo was able to record a 3-1 decision at the Convocation Center, Oct. 24.
EAGLES LOOK TO CONTINUE STREAK VERSUS AKRON: The Eagles will look to continue their recent success over the University of Akron Saturday, Oct. 23, at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio. Akron leads the all-time series, 17-12, but the Eagles have won five of the last seven matches versus the Zips dating back to Oct. 1, 2004. The Zips pulled out a 3-2 thriller last season, Oct. 23, 2009, at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti.
SHOOTING FOR VICTORY NUMBER 20: When the Eagles take to the court Friday, Oct. 22, at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y., Head Coach Kim Berrington's squad will be shooting for their 20th victory of the season. Eastern Michigan has posted at least 20 wins in a season just nine times in the program's 35-year history, and it would mark the first-time since 2007 when the squad finished with a 20-14 mark. Berrington has been the mentor for five of those nine seasons in which the Eagles have posted more than 20 victories.
CHECKING THE CAREER STATS: Junior Ashley Mason is now just 160 assists shy of surpassing Gretchen Olsen (1991-94) for fourth place in the EMU record books. Mason has 3,226 assists in 345 career sets played. Meanwhile, junior Haley Stein needs one more dig for 1,300 in her career and 28 more to pass Becky Baltare (2005-05) for fourth place with 1,327 digs.
Rachel Iaquaniello is inching her way towards the career charts list with 779 kills, 483 digs and 51 service aces in 221 sets.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Green and White have enjoyed the friendly confines of the EMU Convocation Center over the past 10 seasons, posting a 70-36 mark in the “Nest,” including six home victories this season.
BERRINGTON ENTERS CONCORDIA HALL OF FAME: EMU head volleyball coach Kim Berrington was inducted into the Concordia University Ann Arbor's Hall of Fame Saturday, Oct. 16. Berrington was recognized along with her 1995 volleyball team that posted a 33-14 overall record and finished as the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national runner-up.
The 1995 Concordia volleyball team was a force to be reckoned with in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Lady Cardinals swept their way through the competition and finished the WHAC schedule with a perfect 10-0 record on their way to capturing the 1995 WHAC Championship crown. Many individual records were set during the 1995 season by many of the players on the roster. Records for most kills (Kim Chaffee), most assists (Karen Keskey), solo blocks (Sarah Riske), block assists (Sarah Riske) and digs (Amy Wilson).
STEIN NAMED MAC's FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Junior libero Haley Stein was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 10. This marks the first time in her career she has won the weekly honor. Earlier in the week Stein was also named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week.
