YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team continued its success this season by winning another Mid-American Conference match, beating cross-divisional foe Miami University, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18), here at the Convocation Center Friday, Oct. 15.
With the win, the Eagles push to 18-6 (4-2 MAC) while the RedHawks fall to 7-13 (2-4 MAC). It was the first time since the 2005 season that the Eagles beat Miami, and the win also marks the biggest single-season turnaround in the program's history.
The Eagles took the first set 25-19 with two kills by sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) late in the set cemented the victory. Iaquaniello led the set with six kills, posting a .500 attack percentage (6-12), while Colleen Loftus and Michele Metzler paced Miami with four kills apiece.
Errors plagued the Eagles in the second set as they recorded six to Miami's unblemished tally, leaving the RedHawks victorious (23-25).
The Green and White controlled the third set, never trailing and walking away with a 25-20 set victory. Freshman Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) led the Eagles by capitalizing on five-of-eight attempts (.625). Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) was a perfect three-for-three in attacks as she went on to tally eight kills. Loftus and Metzler again led the RedHawks along with Jenn Caylor each recording four kills.
In the fourth set, the Eagles proved too much for the RedHawks by putting them away, 25-18, to close out the match. EMU recorded a .275 attack percentage (14-40), while the RedHawks were only able to capitalize on 10 of their 45 attempts (.089). Iaquaniello tallied two service aces and two digs. Freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) led the defense notching nine digs, while reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week, Haley Stein, recorded seven. Iaquaniello finished the match with 15 kills and seven digs. Short tallied 13 kills, four assists and three digs.
The Eagles hit the court again Saturday, Oct. 16, to take on the Falcons of Bowling Green State University at the annual Dig Pink match where the team will be sporting pink uniforms to raise money for breast cancer awareness. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
