YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team ended its five-match homestand on a high note here Saturday evening, Oct. 16, with a sweep of the Bowling Green State University Falcons (25-22; 25-11; 25-23) at the Convocation Center in the annual Dig Pink match.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 19-6 overall and 5-2 in Mid-American Conference play while Bowling Green falls to 6-16 and 1-7 in the MAC. The sweep was also the Eagles' 12th of the season.
Following a see-saw affair in the opening set, the Eagles took control of the match with superior offensive and ball handling. EMU recorded a .232 hitting percentage with just nine attack errors compared to .152 hitting and 23 errors for the Falcons.
Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the way offensively for the Eagles with nine kills (38 attempts; .211 attack percentage), while freshman Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orville) (7-of-19; .368), sophomore Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) (7-of-20; .350) and Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) (7-of-22; .091) each chipped in with seven kills.
Lindsey Butterfield paced the Falcons offensively with 11 kills in 26 attempts for a .269 attack percentage. Paige Penrod added 10 kills of her own in 42 attempts (.095).
EMU won a back-and-forth battle in set one, 25-22. After being deadlocked at eight, the Eagles struck for five of the next six points to take a 13-9 lead. Following a timeout, Bowling Green found its own offensive touch and stormed ahead, 17-16. Both sides traded the lead until EMU pulled ahead for good, 23-21, following a timely kill from Baker and a Falcon hitting error.
In contrast to the opening set, the Eagles exercised complete control over set two en route to a convincing 25-11 win. An onslaught of offensive power combined with four Bowling Green errors afforded the Green and White its largest margin of victory (14 points) since a 25-10 triumph over Youngstown State, Sept. 21.
Again in the third set, Eastern Michigan jumped out to an early 8-3 lead and never looked back in a 22-14 triumph. The Falcons slowly chipped away to pull back to within one, 15-14, before five straight hitting errors put EMU ahead, 20-14. With the set seemingly in hand, BGSU put together one last charge to cut the Eagle advantage to one, 24-23. Roback answered and brought a crowd of 628 to its feet with the final kill of the evening.
The Eagles now begin a four-match road swing beginning with a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. to face the University at Buffalo Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.
