Three goals lead the EMU women's soccer team past NIU in MAC West Division action

Box Score

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a goal and an assist from each Paige Sheridan and Stephanie Clarke, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team defeated Northern Illinois, 3-1, in a Mid-American Conference West Division battle at Scicluna Field Friday, Oct. 15.

The Eagles continue its unbeaten streak as it now stands at seven games after today's victory. With the win, EMU improves its record to 8-5-3 overall, 5-0-2 in the MAC. Meanwhile, Northern Illinois falls to 7-6-1 (3-3-1 MAC).

Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) continued her offensive surge with goal number seven of the season and 15th of her career in the 28th minute of the first half. The senior's anticipation off a deflection, following a long pass from teammate Julie Kaim (Palos Hills, Ill.-AA Stagg), allowed her to position herself for a strong right-footed shot that was placed just inside the left post.

Just a few minutes into the second half, Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) tallied her fourth goal of the season in impressive fashion. After a good defensive play by Amanda Marsh (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) to start the counter attack, Maggie Christensen (Orland Park, Ill.-AA Stagg) fed Clarke with a pass leaving her nothing but open field in front of her. The freshman then planted the right foot – and with her left – delivered a bending shot that wrapped around the diving keeper and inside the left post.

Freshman Allison Kaim (Palos Hills, Ill.-AA Stagg) got into the action as well, scoring her first career goal in the 68th minute. Kaim hammered home the rebound off a Sheridan miss to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. A very accurate lead pass from Clarke set up the play for her team-leading sixth assist of the year.

The Huskies would add a goal in the 72nd minute on Kelsey Passaglia's third goal of the season.

Monique Budani made seven saves to earn her 26th career victory, tying her for third on the EMU all-time list. The reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week had her scoreless minutes streak snapped at 274 minutes after Passaglia's goal, but stretches her own unbeaten streak to six matches.

The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 17, when they take on Western Michigan for Senior Day at Scicluna Field. Four seniors will make their final regular season home appearances for EMU.
