YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team used a first half goal and gritty defense to secure a 1-1 tie with the Western Michigan University Broncos on Senior Day at Scicluna Field, Sunday, Oct. 17.
The Eagles were outshot by a 3:1 ratio, but behind the effort of senior goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) were able to maintain the draw. With the tie, Eastern Michigan moves its record to 8-5-4 overall, 5-0-3 in the MAC, while WMU's record moves to 7-6-3 (3-2-3 MAC).
After Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-North) put a shot on goal that was saved, senior Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) charged in hard for the rebound with a shot attempt that just crossed the goal line before Western Michigan goalkeeper Julia Francy could make another remarkable stop.
For Sheridan, it was her fourth goal in as many games and her eighth overall for the season as it gave EMU a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Detrick recorded her third assist of the season.
In the 61st minute Anina Cicerone headed in the equalizer off a Caitlin Henderson corner kick. It marked Cicerone's fourth goal of the year and was just enough to get the Broncos a 1-1 draw. It was the second draw in a row between both squads.
Budani made seven saves in a superb effort to pull her to within one save of the EMU single season record of 126 held by Erin Norton ('00). It was the sixth overtime game for Eastern Michigan already this season, posting a 1-2-2 in those contests.
EMU will be back in action Friday, Oct. 22, when they take on Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Game time between the Eagles and Cardinals is slated for 3 p.m.
