Box Score
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Freshman Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic) netted the game-winning score while senior Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) made eight saves to become the schools' all-time record holder for saves in a single season as the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team defeated Ball State University, 1-0, in double overtime, Friday, Oct. 22.
The goal was Cutaia's second of the season and propelled the Eagles to a victory that clinches home field advantage for the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament to be held Sunday, Oct. 31. With the win, EMU moves to 9-5-4 on the season and ties its league win total from last year as it goes to 6-0-3 in MAC play. Meanwhile, Ball State falls to 6-9-2 (0-7-2 MAC).
In the match's 102nd minute, senior Paige Sheridan's (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) aggressive play to win back the ball at the Cardinal end of the field provided immediate dividends. After Sheridan won the ball, she fed it into the box to Cutaia who ended the game with the score.
On the other side of the ball, the Cardinals did their part by keeping Budani very busy in goal. The Whitby, Ontario native came through on numerous occasions to claim her sixth shutout of the season and 22nd of her career in the match. More notably, the senior set the all-time single-season saves record at EMU just 7:33 into the match.
Budani tied the record with a save on Missy Gordon at the 6:03 mark and then broke it when Gordon tried her hand once more at the 7:55 mark in the first half. Budani has now made it seven straight matches with seven or more saves and brings her season total to a nation-leading 133 saves.
The Eagles are now unbeaten through its first nine conference matches, the first time that has happened since 2003 when EMU captured its second MAC regular season title. Currently, the Eagles are third to Toledo and Central Michigan who entered Friday with identical 8-0 MAC records.
EMU will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 24, when it looks to make it two wins in a row against its AMC West rival, Toledo. The Eagles and Rockets are slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Scott Park.
