SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Northern Illinois University is 7-5-1 overall and closed out the first half of the conference season with a 3-2-1 start, defeating Ball State, Buffalo and Akron with losses to Toledo and Ohio and a draw with Kent State. Offensively, the Huskies are paced by Kelsey Passaglia's six points (2 G, 2 A) on 32 shots this season. As a team, NIU has just 12 goals scored (10th in the MAC) while giving up only 14 (T-3rd in the MAC). Defensively, Amy Carr has put together a stellar season thus far in goal, registering a 0.99 GAA and a .750 save percentage. She ranks atop the league with six shutouts in only 13 starts.
A LOOK AT THE BRONCOS: Western Michigan University is 7-5-2 overall with a 3-1-2 conference mark. The Broncos' wins have come against Ball State, Kent State and Akron with two draws to Buffalo and Ohio and the lone conference loss at Toledo. So far this season, WMU has outscored its opponents, 30-12, posting a season-high six goals in a victory over Murray State earlier this year. The Broncos offense is paced by Stephanie Skowneski's MAC-leading 20 points (8 G, 4 A) on 42 shots. Brittney Pavlica has added four goals as well. In goal, Julia Francy ranks third in the MAC in GAA (0.76) and save percentage (.841), while posting four shutouts as well.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles extended their unbeaten streak to six games while sweeping through the first half of the MAC schedule unscathed against MAC East Division teams. The Green and White defeated Kent State, 2-0, and Buffalo, 1-0, in its previous two matches. Senior forward Paige Sheridan posted game-winning goals in each contest while bringing her season total to a team-leading six goals. Senior goalkeeper Monique Budani made a combined 16 saves in both contests to bring her season total to a MAC-leading 111 saves. The two-shutout effort also earned her MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this year.
MAC WEST DOMINANCE: There are three unbeaten teams remaining in the Mid-American Conference and each reside in the MAC West Division. Toledo and Central Michigan are each 6-0 while Eastern Michigan is 4-0-2. Last weekend, the West went a combined 8-2-2 on the weekend, winning four matches each day. The Eagles defeated Kent State last Friday, Oct. 8, before claiming a win over Buffalo, Sunday, Oct. 10. All that remains for the Eagles is five divisional matchups with MAC leaders, Toledo and Central Michigan, serving as their final two opponents.
BUDANI EARNS SECOND POW AWARD: EMU senior goalkeeper Monique Budani claimed her second MAC Defensive Player of the Week (Aug. 31 and Oct. 11) honor of her career, and this season, after making 16 saves in two shutouts over Kent State and Buffalo last weekend. Budani now has five shutouts this season and 111 saves, which leads the conference. She has already set the EMU career saves record when she passed Nikki Allen's ('04) mark of 312, and is just 15 saves shy of tying Erin Norton's ('99) single-season record of 126 saves set back in 1997.
OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE: After being shutout in two straight matches at Nevada and in the conference opener against Ohio, the Eagles have posted 14 goals in their last five contests. EMU notched a 4-1 victory over Akron Sunday, Sept. 26, which had been the most goals scored by an Eagle squad since recording five goals in a shutout win over Loyola College (Md.) Sept. 13, 2009. But then they followed it up with a six-goal effort in a 6-4 win over Bowling Green at home on Friday, Oct. 1. EMU then defeated Kent State, 2-0, before beating Buffalo, 1-0, making it six straight unbeaten contests while outscoring its opponents 14-6 during that span.
EXCEPTIONAL START: EMU begins the conference portion of its schedule unbeaten through its first six matches for the first time since 2003 when it went through the first nine matched unscathed before claiming a MAC regular season title. The Green and White is coming off back-to-back seasons in which it placed second in the overall standings and made it to at least the semifinal round in the MAC Tournament with a runner-up finish in 2008.
MAC ROAD SUCCESS: The Eagles have gone 12 straight regular season MAC road matches unbeaten dating back to 2008. EMU suffered its last conference road loss to Northern Illinois by a score of 1-0 back on Oct. 28, 2007. They are 6-0-6 during their current streak.
