YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team dropped a dual meet with fourth-ranked Oakland University by a score of 157-143 Saturday, January 9, at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium.

The Eagles, ranked eighth in the CSCAA Division I Mid-Major Poll, took five of the 16 events on the day and were led by Sarah Kowalski and Briana Emig who each had two wins apiece, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Grizzlies made it two consecutive narrow victories over EMU. Last year, Oakland took a 10-point win in Rochester.

Emig got the day started in the first individual race with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning by a convincing 10-plus seconds with a time of 10:15.95 over teammate Samantha Partridge. The sophomore followed that win up with another win in the 500-yard free and a second place finish in the 200-yard free. Once again, Partridge made it a 1-2 Eagle finish.

Kowalski did her damage in the sprint freestyle races by first taking the 50-yard free before turning in a victory in the 100-yard free. She also added second place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Steph Cholyk finished right behind in both events, placing third in the 50 and second in the 100.

Sarah Maraskine and Michelle Gingher turned in a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke with Maraskine taking it with a time of 58.29 and Gingher touching the wall in 59-flat.

Oakland's Sandra Czerska won three events on the afternoon with victories in the 200-yard IM and 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Agnes Solan, Johann Gustafsson and Chelsea Oats nearly matched Czerska with two wins apiece on the day. Oats took both diving events with EMU's Danielle Hulvey and Kelly Hendricks finishing second and third in the one meter dive and Hendricks and Lesley Vizurraga finishing second and third in the three-meter.

The Eagles will enjoy a week of rest before preparing for dual meets against Wayne State and Ball State on Jan. 22-23, to take place at Jones Natatorium.
