Women's Swimming & Diving To Host Final Two Home Meets

-- The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team will host its final two regular season home meets of the 2009-10 season when they take on Wayne State this Friday and Ball State on Saturday Jan. 22-23 at Jones Natatorium.

The Eagles are striving for eight straight wins over Wayne State before they take on Ball State in Mid-American Conference action. EMU sits 2-2 in the MAC thus far.

FOR THE 34TH TIME:
The 2009-10 season marks the 34th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 44-17 overall record and a 31-12 MAC mark in now his sixth season.


ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Wayne State University is the top-ranked Division II women's swimming and diving team in the nation. In their most recent action, the Warriors took on second-ranked Grand Valley State Jan. 9 and turned in a dominating, 189.5-110.5, win in Detriot after taking 14-of-16 events on the day. Wayne State has dropped seven straight meetings to the Eagles including last year's 155-82 decision at Jones Natatorium.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: The Ball State University women are coming off a win over Illinois State last Saturday, Jan. 16. The Cardinals defeated the Red Birds 154-146 on the road, pushing their overall record to 6-4. In MAC action, Ball State has dropped two straight since beating Bowling Green at home. Their three losses have come to Toledo, Akron and Buffalo. The Eagles are 2-2 against common opponents.

LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan hasn't competed since a narrow loss to the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University back on Jan. 9. The Eagles fell 157-143 despite taking five wins on the day. Briana Emig swam to wins in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Sarah Kowlaski won two events as well, taking the 50- and 100-yard freestyles while finishing second in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. Kelly Hendricks turned in two top-three performances in the one and three-meter dives.

FINAL TIME AT JONES IN 2010: The Eagles will host swim meets at Michael H. Jones Natatorium for the final time in 2010 when they host Wayne State and Ball State Friday and Saturday, respectively. Their dual meet with Wayne State is slated for 6 p.m. Friday, while Saturday's meet with Ball State is set to begin at 1 p.m.

EMU RANKED EIGHTH IN MID-MAJOR POLL: The Eagles are ranked eighth in the CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Swimming & Diving Team Poll released on Dec. 27. They follow top-ranked and Mid-American Conference foe, Miami, Boston University, Towson, Oakland, UW-Milwaukee, Florida Gulf Coast and Western Kentucky.
