FOR THE 34TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 34th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 44-16 overall record and a 31-12 MAC mark in now his sixth season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES: The Eagles had their three-year winning streak against Oakland snapped last year when they fell 155-145 in Rochester on Jan. 10, 2009. This Saturday, Jan. 9, the Golden Grizzlies invade Jones Natatorium for the second time in a row, having not competed since the team split action between the EMU Invitational and Miami Invitational Dec. 4-5. Oakland finished seventh at the EMU Invite, but claimed a fourth place finish at the Miami Invite behind CSCAA Mid-Major Division I top-ranked Miami. Oakland enters this weekend ranked fourth in the latest Mid-Major poll while the Eagles sit four spots behind in eighth.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan took part in an unusual invitational meet at Florida International University Jan. 2, in which several events that aren't typically seen were in competition. The Eagles opened up the New Year with a win over six other teams at the meet. The Eagles won five of the seven events including the 400-yard medley, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 400-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke relays while placing second in the 200-yard freestyle relay and third in the 200-yard butterfly relay. Only three of the aforementioned events will the Eagles compete in at the 2010 MAC Championships in Oxford, Ohio at the end of February.
LOOKING FOR SIX IN A ROW: EMU heads into its dual meet with Oakland riding a five-meet winning streak in home meets to open a new year. The last time the Eagles dropped a home dual meet to open a new year was Jan. 10, 2004 when they fell to Denison, 125-118. The streak started in Peter Linn's first year as head coach back in 2004-05 with a 166-71 win over Denison. The Eagles defeated Wayne State 155-82 on Jan. 23, 2009.
EMU RANKED EIGHTH IN MID-MAJOR POLL: The Eagles come in ranked eighth in the CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Swimming & Diving Team Poll released on Dec. 27. They follow top-ranked and Mid-American Conference foe, Miami, Boston University, Towson, Oakland, UW-Milwaukee, Florida Gulf Coast and Western Kentucky.
