YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will host Oakland University at the Jones Natatorium this Saturday, January 9, at 2 p.m. The Eagles are looking to start the New Year off right as they compete in their first dual meet in 2010.
This will be a true test for third-ranked EMU as the Golden Grizzlies invade Ypsilanti with a No. 13 ranking to their name following the most recent CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Poll. The Eagles are trying to bounce back from a narrow defeat to Oakland in Rochester last year.

FOR THE 46TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 46th season for men's swimming and diving at Eastern Michigan University. Throughout the years, EMU has won 28 Mid-American Conference Championships, four NAIA Championships and was the NCAA Division II National Champion in 1972. The Eagles have only had three head coaches during its history of building one of the most successful programs at EMU. Bill Lewis began the program in 1964 before giving way to Mike Jones in 1968. Peter Linn has been at the helm of EMU swimming and diving since the 1988 season, leading the Eagles to 18 of the past 21 MAC titles.
SEEKING NO. 29: The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will be looking to win its 29th overall and fourth straight Mid-American Conference title this season. Last year, the Eagles registered a school record 1,046.5 points en route to the championship. EMU has won the past three titles and nine of the last 10. They lost nine seniors to graduation entering this season, but welcomed 12 freshmen and 13 newcomers to start the year.
ABOUT OAKLAND: The Oakland University men's swimming and diving team enter this weekend with a 2-2 overall record and will compete for the first time in over a month. The last time the Golden Grizzlies took part in a meet was when they split the team to compete in the EMU Invitational and Miami Invitational Dec. 4-5. Sending most of their top swimmers and divers to the Miami Invite, the Golden Grizzlies took first, accumlating 1,756 points on their way to a 13th-ranking in the latest CSCAA Division I Mid-Major poll. Oakland took last year's meeting by a narrow, 151-147, margin to snap the Eagles' dual meet win streak of 10 against OU, which dated all the way back to 1995-96.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan took part in an unusual invitational meet at Florida International University Jan. 2, in which several events that aren't typically seen were in competition. The Eagles opened up the New Year with a second place finish at the four-team meet. Their 104 points weren't enought to catch the U.S. Air Force Academy who won the meet with 154 points. The Eagles won the 200-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle relays while finishing third in the 200-yard butterfly relay and 400-yard freestyle relays and second in the 200-yard breaststroke relay. Only the 400-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays will the Eagles compete in at the 2010 MAC Championships hosted by EMU at the Jones Natatorium March 4-6.
EAGLES JUMP TO THIRD IN MID-MAJOR POLL: The Eagles debuted at number four in the CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Swimming & Diving Poll and have since jumped to third after the most recent poll, released Dec. 27.
