OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team won nine of the 16 events scored to defeat Miami, 164-136, at Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio Saturday afternoon, Jan. 30. With the win, the Eagles conclude the conference season unbeaten and stretch their Mid-American Conference dual meet win streak to 53 consecutive victories.

Sophomore Troy Esentan got things started for the Eagles following a narrow opening-meet win by Miami in the 200-yard medley relay in which the RedHawks squeaked it out by less than a second. Esentan got the Eagles on the board with a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 9:33.78 to eclipse his fastest time in the event and resetting the fastest time in the MAC this season. He would also add a win in the 500-yard free later on in the meet.

Freshman Jacob Hanson added two more wins to his impressive rookie resume. He took home victories in the 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard IM. He was edged out by the slimmest of margins in the 100-yard backstroke as Miami's Chris Gunnels touched the wall in a time of 50.80, just .02 seconds ahead of Hanson (50.82).

Matt Lifka, Sam Dolato and Scott Murphy finished 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke with Lifka taking the event with a time of 58.30. Other notable winners for the Eagles were Owen Grey in the 200-yard butterfly, Murphy in the 200-yard breaststroke, Jeffrey Craig in the one meter dive and Justin Griggs in the 100-yard butterfly. Griggs, who is coming off his first MAC Swimmer of the Week award, set a new top time in the MAC this season with his time of 49.62 in the 100-yard fly.

The Eagles will be back in action next week as they head to Ohio State Friday, Feb. 5 to close out the regular season. The meet is slated to begin at 5 p.m. The MAC Championships begin March 4-6 and will be hosted by EMU at Jones Natatorium.
