COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team was upended by No. 9 Ohio State, 177-112, at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University Friday, Feb. 5.
The Eagles won five events on the evening, but couldn't overcome a strong Buckeye senior class that was honored in their final home meet of the 2010 season. OSU captured the first nine events before Jacob Hanson was able to edge Ohio State's Itai Chammah by four-hundredths of a second in the 200-yard backstroke, winning with a time of 1:49.28.
Although the meet seemed out of reach, Hanson's win started a string of three Eagles wins in four events. Keith Coghlan claimed victory over teammate Dave Stefl in the 500-yard free with a winning time of 4:42.93 while Justin Griggs swam to a win in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 50.35.
Also turning in wins for the Eagles were Carlos Nunez in the 200-yard IM and the 400-yard free relay team of Griggs, Hanson, Jake Heyblom and Matt Zavislak, who turned in a time of 3:09.25.
The meet marked the end of the regular season for the Eagles. They will use the next month to prepare for the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships which will take place at EMU's Jones Natatorium March 4-6.
