FOR THE 46TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 46th season for men's swimming and diving at Eastern Michigan University. Throughout the years, EMU has won 28 Mid-American Conference Championships, four NAIA Championships and was the NCAA Division II National Champion in 1972. The Eagles have only had three head coaches during its history of building one of the most successful programs at EMU. Bill Lewis began the program in 1964 before giving way to Mike Jones in 1968. Peter Linn has been at the helm of EMU swimming and diving since the 1988 season, leading the Eagles to 18 of the past 21 MAC titles.
SEEKING NO. 29: The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will be looking to win its 29th overall and fourth straight Mid-American Conference title this season. Last year, the Eagles registered a school record 1,046.5 points en route to the championship. EMU has won the past three titles and nine of the last 10. They lost nine seniors to graduation entering this season, but welcomed 12 freshmen and 13 newcomers to start the year.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS: Miami University is currently ranked 23rd in the CSCAA Division I Mid-Major poll and are coming off a 160-131 loss to Buffalo on the road last week in MAC action. The RedHawks split two MAC meets against new conference affiliates Evansville and Southern Illinois earlier this season, dropping a road affair to the Salukis, 152-91, back in October.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan turned in two wins last weekend, defeating Wayne State and Ball State, the latter which extended its MAC dual meet win streak to 52 consecutive meets. The Eagles won the first five events of the meet against Ball State en route to the 158-127 victory. Matt Zavislak took the 200-yard free, Justin Griggs won the 100-yard backstroke and Sam Dolato and Troy Esentan finished 1-2 in the 100-yard breastroke, respectively.
GRIGGS TABBED MAC SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Junior transfer Justin Griggs earned his first MAC Swimmer of the Week honor of his career. Against Wayne State, Griggs won the 100 fly and swam the second-fastest split for the first place finishing 200 medley relay team. He finished second in the 50 free as well and his time of 20.94 was good for second-best in the MAC this season. In the win over Ball State, he recorded the sixth-fastest time in the MAC in both the 100 free and 100 back with times of 46.64 and 51.07, respectively.
SOARING HIGH: The Eagles are 29-10 all-time vs. Miami since their first meeting back in 1965, the first year of the program, under then Head Coach
Bill Lewis. Eastern Michigan has won 13 straight dating back to the 1995-96 season and are 18-2 under Head Coach Peter Linn.
CENTURY MILESTONE: EMU head men's coach Peter Linn won his 100th career MAC dual meet after a victory over Ball State Saturday, Jan. 23. It pushed his all-time conference record to an incredible 100-6 mark while also extending EMU's dual meet win streak over conference opponents to 52.
