YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team knocked off Ball State by a score of 158-127 Saturday, Jan. 23, at Jones Natatorium. With the win the Eagles pushed their Mid-American Conference dual-meet win streak to 52 straight and sit 5-1 overall, 2-0 in league duals.
The men won 10-of-16 events on the day and it begun with a convincing start as EMU's 'B', 'C' and 'D' squads swept the podium with a 1-2-3 finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Gilles Renard and Ricky Linder followed that up with a 1-2 finish in the day's second event, the 1,000-yard freestyle. The Eagles would make it five-for-five to start the meet as Matt Zavislak took the 200-yard free, Justin Griggs won the 100-yard backstroke and Sam Dolato out-touched teammate Troy Esentan to win the 100-yard breastroke.
Esentan would add a win, however, with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:07.35. Griggs would add a second win as well, racing to a time of 46.64 in the 100-yard free. Owen Grey triumphed in the 200-yard backstroke while Keith Coghlan won the 500-yard free and Jeffrey Craig bested everyone in the one meter dive.
Prior to the meet, there was a moment of silence in honor of the late Michael H. Jones who passed away last November. He established the winning tradition EMU swimming has displayed for years, coaching the men's team to four national titles and numerous MAC Championships during his tenure that lasted from 1967-88.
The Eagle men will be back in action against Miami next Saturday, Jan. 30, in Oxford, Ohio. The next time EMU will return to Jones Natatorium will be March 4-6 to host the 2010 MAC Championships.
