Chelsea Detrick gave EMU a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, but four unanswered goals by Michigan proved too much

Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Things looked good early on for the Eagles with Chelsea Detrick netting her first goal of the season, but Michigan got even and then pulled away, scoring four unanswered goals to come away with the 4-1 win at the U-M Soccer Complex on Sunday.

What turned out to be a very physical game by the end was a very evenly played match in the first half. Both sides had their fair share of chances in the opening frame, the first came off the foot of the sophomore, Detrick.

She was the beneficiary of a three-on-two breakaway in which Maggie Christensen delivered a perfect through ball, giving Detrick a one-on-one with the Michigan keeper, Kristen Keane. Detrick, who led the team in goals (11) and points (24) in 2008 had no trouble chipping it over a charging Keane for the score.

When both teams met last season, it was the Wolverines who got on the board first, scoring two goals early on before the Eagles (2-1) tied things up in the second half which is how the game ended.

This time around, Michigan (3-3) down 1-0, almost answered the Detrick goal immediately after. A lofted shot by a Wolverine forward caught a charging Monique Budani away from goal. The ball sailed over her head, destined to tie the game at, 1-1, but Katie Lozar retreated to protect that back line and headed the ball out of harm's way to preserve the lead.

It wasn't long after that Michigan would finally get that equalizer when Amanda Bowery used a deflected Jackie Carron corner kick and headed it in over the head of Budani. Set pieces plagued the Eagles all day as two scores followed from similar situations before the first half came to an end.

The final tally in the opening half came off a free kick from Carron in which nobody on the Eagle defense was able to get a foot on the ball to clear it out. Carron finished with an impressive day, scoring a goal and assisting on two others.

Up 3-1 in the second half, the Michigan defense proved too strong, allowing just three shots in the final 45 minutes of action. Keane made three saves in earning the win.

A total of 26 fouls were called in the match with two yellow cards going against the Wolverines. Eastern Michigan falls to 0-6-1 all-time against their cross-town rivals. They'll host Detroit on Tuesday, a team they haven't lost to in their last five meetings. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
