ABOUT THE BULLS: University at Buffalo comes into Friday's match with a 1-8-1 record. The Bulls dropped their first five games before gaining that first win over Niagara at home. They opened MAC play at home, tying Miami, 1-1, before falling to Ball State, 1-0. Buffalo has had their fair share of problems offensively this season, scoring only five goals through their first 10 games with each one coming from a different player. Stephanie Valez leads the team with three points while six others are tied with two. Head Coach Michael Thomas is in his second season for the Bulls, compiling a record of 5-18-5 in his early tenure.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN FLASHES: Kent State enters the weekend with a 6-3 overall record, and is off to a quick 2-0 start in MAC play. The Golden Flashes have won five of their last six matches, including two straight against Ball State and Miami at home. They boast a 12-7 goal differential in their favor and average 14.2 shots per game. Kellyn Flanagan leads the team with seven points (3 G, 1 A) while Catharine Marosszeky and Vanessa Salerno each have six. Goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood has a goals against average of 0.75 with four shutouts thus far and two in a row heading into the weekend. Head Coach Rob Marinaro is in his ninth season with an overall record of 73-73-18.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles opened up MAC play with a pair of ties on the road. Friday, the Eagles scored a late goal vs. Akron in the 83rd minute by senior Ashley Rodrigues, but then gave up the tying goal less than a minute later. No one scored in either overtime period and it was called a draw. Sunday, EMU and Ohio played aggressive defense upon soggy field conditions. Five yellow cards were handed out and neither side could find the back of the net. The four cards handed out to the Eagles were their first four of the season. Maggie Manville made five saves and picked up her third shutout of the year while the Eagles settled for their third tie in a row.
UNBEATEN IN MAC HOME OPENERS: The Eagles enter Friday's match against Buffalo with an unbeaten record all-time in MAC home openers at Scicluna Field. EMU is 10-0-2 all-time and has won four of its last five home openers overall. Both ties came to Akron in 2007 and Buffalo in 2003. The Green and White defeated Miami, 5-0, in last season's home opener Sept. 26.
HOMECOMING TRIBUTE TO '99 TEAM: Eastern Michigan University and the women's soccer program will pay tribute to the 1999 team that captured the MAC regular season and tournament titles 10 years ago. It was the first-ever MAC title for EMU women's soccer and it was the last time the Eagles qualified for the NCAA tournament. They'll be honored during halftime of the homecoming football game Saturday, Oct. 3, and again during halftime of the women's soccer game Sunday, Oct. 4. Heading up that '99 team will be Amanda Kulikowski and Sarah Willis. Kulikowski is the Eagles' all-time leader in assists (25) and game-winning goals (11) and ranks second in goals (24) and points (73). She set a single season points record that season, scoring 11 goals and 12 assists (34 points). As goalkeeper, Willis ranks atop the charts in all-time wins (24), goals against average (0.86) and shutouts (19). She tallied 13 of those shutouts in 1999 alone while making 112 saves and posting a 0.46 GAA.
SEEKING HIS ELUSIVE 110TH VICTORY: Head Coach Scott Hall has been seeking his 110th career victory since his squad defeated Loyola College (Md.), 5-0, back on Sept. 13. He'll try for the fifth time this Friday against Buffalo, a team the Eagles have a winning record against all-time.
TRENDING MAC TIES: There were five ties seen in the opening weekend of MAC play, two of which involved Eastern Michigan. The Eagles played to a 1-1 draw with Akron Sept. 25, then a scoreless draw at Ohio, Sept. 27. It added up to their third consecutive tie game after they battled Michigan State to a 1-1 decision in their final non-conferene tilt, Sept. 20. EMU sits with four ties overall heading into its match with Buffalo, Oct. 2. One more draw and the Green and White would match last season's record-setting five ties as they finished with an overall mark of 13-5-5.
