Eastern Michigan records its third straight tie, fourth this season in scoreless MAC battle.
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Amidst soggy field conditions and physical play, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team battled with Ohio University through regulation and two overtimes before coming away with a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27, here at Chessa Field.
The Eagles and Bobcats combined for just 25 total shots in 110 minutes and only nine of which were put on goal. Maggie Manville made five saves for her third shutout of the season and 14th of her career for the Eagles. Meanwhile, Ohio's Jess Maclean made five saves for her first shutout of the year.
Defensively, neither team allowed possession to get deep into its own territory early on. In fact, the Eagles (4-2-4, 0-0-2 MAC) didn't allow a single shot to the 'Cats (3-5-1, 0-1-1 MAC) in the first half. EMU's best scoring opportunity came in the 74th minute, but the shot hit off the crossbar and was cleared out by the Ohio backline. Chelsea Detrick led the way offensively with three total shots, two on goal. Katie Lozar also recorded multiple shots on the day.
The physical play was evident by virtue of five yellow cards being handed out between both sides, four of which went to the Green and White. Coming into the day, the Eagles hadn't been issued a single card all season.
For the Eagles, it was their third consecutive tie of the year and fourth this season. They finished with five in 2008 which was a school record. Eastern Michigan will seek its first MAC win of the year when it returns home next Friday for its MAC home opener against Buffalo Oct. 2. The Eagles and Bulls will kickoff at 3 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
