Carissa Wilson's first career hat trick paced the Eagles' 5-0 win over Loyola (Md.)
RICHMOND, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The flood gates opened, finally, as Eastern Michigan netted five goals in a shutout win over Loyola (Md.) to sweep its two games at the VCU/Impact Sports Invitational. Carissa Wilson recorded her first career hat trick and Monique Budani made seven saves in her second shutout of the year.
The Eagles, who averaged more than 17 shots per game entering play on Sunday hadn't been able to score more than twice in any game this year, until today. The Green and White tallied 19 shots, 10 of which landed on goal, translating into their most lopsided win since another 5-0 shutout of Miami (OH) Sept. 26, 2008.
The Eagles wasted little time getting on the board as Deana Kinter and Ashley Rodrigues each assisted on Chelsea Detrick's second goal of the year in the ninth minute. In the 27th minute, Kinter had her shot saved by Loyola keeper, Danielle Ippolito, but Wilson was there to clean up the rebound for her first goal of the afternoon and gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Eastern Michigan wouldn't let up on the gas as they pushed forward for a score only three minutes into the second half. Wilson got her second score on the day on another rebound, this time following a knocked down shot off the head of Kinter.
Wilson's third goal of the day occurred in the 63rd minute when she was able to gather and put away her own rebound to give EMU a 4-0 lead. Katie Marsh netted the final score for the Eagles, using a brilliant cross from Alexis Heard.
The Eagles defense deserves just as much praise as the offense, having not allowed a goal in 290 minutes of action. Eastern Michigan emerged as tournament champions after being the only team to finish the VCU/Impact Sports Invitational Tournament with a perfect 2-0 record following the final game between Richmond and VCU which finished in a scoreless draw.
Making the All-Tournament team were four Eagles including tournament MVP, Wilson. The three others included: Rodrigues, Detrick and Julie Kaim. EMU is unbeaten in its last three matches and is turning it on at a good time with home games against IUPUI and Michigan State upcoming.
Next Friday's match against the Jaguars is slated for 4 p.m. Friday at Scicluna Field. The Eagles are looking to remain unbeaten in their last three meetings with IUPUI and are coming off a 2-1 victory over them last year in Indianapolis.
