YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball ran its early-season record to 2-0 with a convincing 87-45 non-conference win over a visiting Marygrove team here Monday night, Nov. 16, in the Convocation Center.
The win gives the Eagles a 2-0 record while Marygrove falls to 3-2.
EMU junior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) recorded a triple-double, scoring 11 points with 12 assists and 10 rebounds. It was the first triple-double for the EMU women since Ryan Coleman accomplished the feat in 2005, and was just the third in school history.
Junior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) led the Eagles with 15 points while sophomore center Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) added 13. Junior Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Edgewater) had a game-high 14 rebounds for EMU. Ebony Jackson was the lone Mustang in double figures with 14 points.
The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 36-of-72 shots while holding the Mustangs to just 30.4 percent on 17-of-56. Eastern also held a huge advantage on the boards, 56-25.
The Mustangs raced out to an early 10-3 lead, bolstered by two three-point field goals from Jackson.
The Eagles began chipping away at the Marygrove advantage and grabbed a brief 11-10 lead on a layup by Huntley-Rogers, but the Mustangs quickly boosted the lead back to four, 15-11, with 12:41 left on a three-point shot by Jackson.
The EMU defense cranked it up a notch at that point, however, and held the visitors scoreless for the next three minutes while tallying 10 of its own for a 23-16 lead with 9:26 left.
From that point on the Eagles began to control the boards and used the fast break to perfection, rolling to a 22-point lead, 40-18, with 3:34 remaining in the half.
Huntley-Rogers led the Eagles in the first half with 13 while Redditt added 11. Jackson paced the Mustangs with nine.
EMU took a commanding 26-12 edge on the boards in the first half while making 20-of-39 shots from the field for 51.3 percent while holding Marygrove to just 9-of-26 for 34.6 percent.
Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's Eagles started the second half just like they finished the first, on a hot streak, building their lead to as much as 40 points, cruising to the 42-point victory.
The Eagles will take their 2-0 record into an East Coast swing this weekend. Eastern will battle Siena in Loudonville, New York Friday, Nov. 20, before moving on to Buffalo to face Niagara, Nov. 22. The Eagles will close out the trip in Philadelphia against Temple on Nov. 24.
