Eagles manage just 255 total yards to 521 for the Chippewas

Box score.

MT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In a series that Eastern Michigan University has dominated of late, Central Michigan University jumped out to a 28-0 edge and never looked back en route to a 56-8 Mid-American Conference victory here Saturday afternoon, Oct. 10, at Kelly-Short Stadium. The Eagles had won four of the last five meetings, including the last two meetings in Mount Pleasant, 48-45, Nov. 16, 2007, and 23-20 in overtime, Sept. 24, 2005.

With the loss the Eagles fall to 0-2 in league action and 0-5 overall, while the Chippewas remain perfect in conference play at 3-0 and 5-1 overall. Eastern managed just 255 yards of total offense (128 rush, 127 pass) while Central accumulated 521 yards (203 rush, 318 pass).

Junior quarterback Kyle McMahon (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) went 8-for-14 for 76 yards via the air and "true" freshman Alex Gillett (Clyde, Ohio-Clyde) rushed for nine times for 38 yards to go along with 9-of-18 passing for 51 yards. Sophomore Corey Welch (Akron, Ohio-Green) rushed for 89 yards and one touchdown to pace the offense.

For Central Michigan, Antonio Brown scored caught four passes for 110 yards and a score and added another with a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. Senior quarterback Dan LeFevour ran the ball 11 times for 45 yards and three scores while going 16-for-22 for 318 yards and three touchdowns via the air.

The Chippewas jumped out a 28-0 advantage squarely on the shoulders of LeFevour and Brown, the Maroon and Gold scored on four of its first five possessions. At the 8:51 mark of the first quarter, LeFevour found a streaking Brown for a 70-yard touchdown. The Andrew Aguila extra point followed to make it 7-0.

LeFevour would find pay-dirt himself with a pair of one-yard touchdown runs with 3:58 to go in the first half and then again at the 12:33 mark of the second quarter to up the margin to 21.

With the EMU offense managing just 23 yards of offense (8 rush, 15 pass) in the opening stanza, the EMU defense saw plenty of time on the field against the potent Chippewa offense. EMU's best scoring chance of the half came with 9:17 left, as half junior place-kicker Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula-Palomar J.C.) lined up for the 47-yard field goal attempt after EMU was flagged for a delay of game penalty. However, with a strong crosswind blowing, the kick fell just short of the goal posts as CMU took over at the 30-yard line.

Eastern was able to able to stop Central in its fourth drive on the ball game, but EMU was again unable to move the chains and was forced to punt the ball back. Senior punter Zach Johnson's (Springboro, Ohio-Springboro) punt was handled by Brown at the 25-yard line and he would scoot 75 yards for the touchdown to make it 28-0 with 2:51 still to go in the period.

CMU would find the end zone once more before the break, as Bryan Schroeder grabbed a LeFevour pass for the 11-yard touchdown reception with just 18 seconds showing on the clock.

The Chippewas would tack on two more touchdowns to open the second half and expand the advantage to 49 points.

The Green and White would crack into the score column with 11:26 left in the game when Welch push in from one-yard out for his first career touchdown to cap the 10 play, 69 drive. Gillett rushed for the two-point conversion to make it 49-8.

That would be all the closer the Eagles would get the rest of the way as the Chippewas cruised to the 56-8 victory.

Eastern Michigan returns to action Saturday, Oct. 17, for a Mid-American Conference tilt versus Kent State University. The game is also the annual band day contest with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium. WEMU (89.1 FM) and WCHB (1200 AM) will carry the game on the radio with Eagle All-Access video streaming the game via EMUEagles.com.
