YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team saw its second action of the season against a Mid-American Conference East Division foe end on a disappointing note as the Eagles fell, 28-6, to a visiting Kent State University here Saturday, Oct. 17, in a cross-divisional game in Rynearson Stadium.
Kent State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and never trailed to record its third win of the season against four losses. The win also gives the Golden Flashes a 2-1 MAC mark. The loss drops the Eagles to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Eagles used a two-quarterback system in the game with true freshman Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) leading his team in rushing with 10 carries for 75 yards. Senior wide receiver DeAnthony White (Kennesaw, Ga.-Kell) was right behind with 73 yards gained on eight carries. Gillett completed five passes for 45 yards while junior quarterback Kyle McMahon (Rochester, Mich.-Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) completed five passes for 30 yards.
Senior linebacker Andre Hatchett (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central) paced the Eagles with 12 tackles while senior defensive back Chris May (Jupiter, Fla.-Dwyer) recorded his third interception of the year. Senior defensive lineman Brandon Downs (Springfield, Ohio-Kenton Ridge) had one sack for four yards.
Kent State was led by quarterback Spencer Keith who completed 10 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns and running back Jacquis Terry rushed for 79 yards on 18 carries.
Kent State jumped out to an early lead, scoring on their first offensive possession of the game after the Eagles fumbled the opening kickoff which the Golden Flashes recovered on when quartertback Spencer Keith found Jon Simpson for a one-yard touchdown pass with Freddy Cortez adding the PAT kick for a 7-0 lead with 11:36 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles clawed right back to cut the lead to 7-3 on a 30-yard Joe Carithers (Dacula, Ga.-Dacula) field goal at the 8:28 mark of the first stanza.
The Golden Flashes went back on top, 14-3, when Keith connected with Tyshon Goode for a 48-yard touchdown strike with Cortez adding the PAT.
Carithers closed out the first-half scoring on a 25-yard field goal with 3:31 still left in the first quarter.
The visitors opened the second half by rolling 69 yards on 12 plays, finishing the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Keth. The PAT by Cortez made it 21-6 in favor of the Golden Flashes.
The Golden Flashes padded the lead with 8:40 remaining when Keith found Kendrick Pressley for a 31-yard touchdown strike with Cortez adding the PAT for a 28-6 lead.
Eastern Michigan will host Ball State University next Saturday, Oct. 24 in a battle of two teams seeking its first win of 2009. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium.
