Men’s and Women’s Swimming Drop Dual Decisions to Oakland

Men win eight events while women claim seven victories
YPSILANTI, Mich.– The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams started off the 2009 portion of the season on the road Saturday, Jan. 11, with a matchup against Oakland University. Both teams fell to their respective opponents, with the men losing 151-147 and the women dropping a 155-145 decision.
With the loss, the men even up their season record at 2-2 (1-0 MAC) while the women drop to 3-3 (3-1 MAC).
The men capped-off the day with wins in eight events. Dan Kish took top honors in the 200 and 500-meter freestyle. Ryan Fulkerson racked-up two wins on the day, taking both the 100 and 200-meter fly with time of 50.45 and 1:51.58, respectively. Don Ellison claimed first place over fellow teammate Scott Murphy in the 200-meter breast. Ellison needed only 2:03.61 to finish the race, while Murphy did it in 2:06.91.
Eastern claimed the top four spots in the 1000-meter freestyle, with Troy Esentan coming out on top with a time of 9:32.65. Following Esentan were Gilles Renard (9:40.97), Tyler Groskopf (9:50.68) and Dave Stefi (9:56.19).
In the 500-meter free, Kish notched a second victory with a time of 4:40.31. Groskopf and Renard finished behind Kish, taking second and third place with times of 4:41.32 and 4:42.09, respectively.
Derick Roe finished first in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 20.82. Fellow teammate Ethan Crabtree finished third with a mark of 21.43. In the diving portion of the event, Matt Guinan won the one-meter by .07 over Oakland's Joe Smith with a mark of 278.47.
The women were victorious in seven events of their own on Saturday. Alissa Ricard got the Eagles started with wins in both the 100-meter and 200-meter free with times of 52.30 and 1:52.91, respectively. Finishing just behind Ricard at third place in the 100-meter was Hannah Burandt, who finished with a time of 53.03.
Elissa Torres won the 200-meter fly with a mark of 2:07.04 while Ashley Durand did the same in the 200-meter breast stroke with a time of 2:21.09. Chelsea Allard finished third to Durand in the event, posting a time of 2:24.17.
The 500-meter freestyle saw Sam Partridge record the win in a time of 5:03.91. Partridge also notched a second place effort in the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 10:26.55. Finally, Samantha Nameth used a final time of 57.11 to take first place in the 100-meter fly.
The relay team of Sarah Kowalski, Stephanie Cholyk, Nameth and Ricard took top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.20.
The men's and women's team will be back in action Friday, Jan. 23, when the squads host Wayne State University at Jones Natatorium. The meet will kickoff at 6 p.m.
