Perrin Wins MAC 10,000-meter Title

Eagles tally 19 points and sit tied for second after day one.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University men’s track and field team tallied 19 point in day one of the 2008 Mid-American Conference Championship Thursday, May 15, here at Whittaker Track on the campus of Bowling Green State University. The Eagles sit tied for second with Central Michigan University. Kent State leads all teams with 40 points.
Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) took home the gold medal in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:04.11. He becomes the first Eagle to win the event since 2004 when Gavin Thompson took home the win. Perrin now has three MAC titles under his belt, as he claimed the cross country title this past fall in 2007 and won the indoor mile in 2007. Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) and Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Northern) rounded out the scoring for the Green and White in the 10,000 meters. Karanja finished fourth with a time of 30:57.98, while Mena crossed the tape with at time of 31:15.88, to finish seventh.
Other Eagles racking up point on day one of three was senior Phil Saffron (Grosse Point, Mich.-Grosse Point) and Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield). Saffron recorded an eighth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 15-01.00, while Gersham took eighth in the hammer throw, with a toss of 159-10.
Day two of the three day meet kicks off at 9 a.m. with the men’s decathlon.
