Sam Vesperman Named Freshman Field Performer of the Year as Track & Field Completes MAC Indoor Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs saw Sam Vesperman earn Co-Indoor Men's Freshman Performer of the Year on the final day of the 2026 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, hosted by Central Michigan University, at the Jack Skoog Track Saturday, Feb. 28. The other recipient of the freshman award was Dominic Weatherly of the University at Buffalo.
The programs also saw three individual champions crowned, with the men finishing third with 98 points and the women finishing eighth with 40 points.
Kian Wiles delivered a remarkable double gold, winning the men's mile in 4:07.31 and the 800 meters in 1:52.47 to lead the Eagles' championship effort. In the field, Gabe Oliveira captured the men's triple jump crown with a mark of 15.30m (50-02.50), and Mariah Taylor took the women's triple jump title with a personal best performance of 12.69m (41-07.75), now holding the third best mark in program history.
How it Happened – Men
Vesperman (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) finished fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.65m (15-03.00), scoring for the Eagles and earning MAC Indoor Freshman Performer of the Year.
In addition to the individual titles earned by Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) and Oliveira (São Paulo, Brazil/Escola Estadual Jornalista David Nasser), the Eagles earned two additional runner-up finishes to boost their team total. In the shot put, Lukas Ray (Lincoln Park, Mich./Wyandotte Roosevelt) secured second place with a throw of 16.42m (53-10.50). In the high jump, sophomore Lucky Fiaku (Nimo, Nigeria/Busy International Secondary) cleared 2.08m (6-09.75) to finish as the runner-up.
On the track, Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School) made his way to the podium in the mile with Wiles, clocking 4:11.08 for third. Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) earned a fourth-place finish in the 800m, running 1:54.08. Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) added a fifth-place finish in the 3,000m with a time of 8:20.73. Jamyle Anderson was fifth in the 60m (6.92), while Michael Hawkins (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) and Leo Ignacio (Saline, Mich./Saline) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 60m hurdles. Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) scored with a sixth-place finish in the mile, and the men's 4x400 meter relay placed fifth in 3:28.37.
How it Happened – Women
The women were highlighted by Taylor (East Lake, Fla./East Lake), as her triple jump win was the sole individual women's title of the meet for the Eagles.
Josephine Oloye (Iawro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School) secured a podium finish with third in the 400m, crossing in 56.09. Jordynn Young (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) added a fifth-place result in the 60m with a 7.57 clocking, while Sophie Emin (Easton Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers) took fourth in the 800m. Eastern's 4x400m relay also reached the podium, placing third with a time of 3:45.72.
