Eagles snap Fighting Irish’s 10 game win streak
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — After snow and cold weather cancelled the past six scheduled Eastern Michigan University softball games, the Eagles returned to field after a nine day hiatus to post a 2-1 victory over the University of Notre Dame in non-conference action here Tuesday afternoon at Ivy Field. The win snaps the Fighting Irish’s 10 game win streak and is UND’s first home loss of the season. EMU has posted a 10-4 mark in its last 14 games, including winning its past four contests.
With the win EMU improves to 11-15, while the Fighting Irish fall to 19-13. The triumph over UND marks just the second EMU victory over the Fighting Irish in school history, moving the all-time series to 9-2, snapping a nine game losing streak for the Eagles.
Senior Aimee Woodrum (5-5) limited Notre Dame batters to just three hits, including a solo home run in the sixth for the Irish’s lone run. Woodrum recorded six strikeouts in the complete game effort. UND’s Brittney Bargar and Kenya Fuemmeler (7-6) were equally impressive combining to allow just four hits in the loss.
Senior Lauren Clark extended her hit streak to eight games with an RBI single in the fifth inning, posting the first run of the game. Junior Ashley Strauss led-off the sixth frame with a double and later scored off a sacrifice fly from the bat of freshman Jenny Scherer. Stephanie Brown put Notre Dame on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the sixth to close out the scoring for the contest. Scherer and junior Jessica Grant each notched the other two hits for the Eagles.
The Eagles will return home for the 2007 home opener recently rescheduled for Friday, April 13. The Eagles will square off against Central Michigan University in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Varsity Field. The teams were originally scheduled to play single games Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, but expected cold and snowy weather has prompted the change.
