EMU edged despite 20-7 shots advantage
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University saw its road momentum halted Sunday, Aug. 16, falling 1-0 to the University of Detroit Mercy at Titan Field.
The Eagles dominated play, holding a 20-7 advantage in shots, but were thwarted by the crossbar, post, and a standout Titans goalkeeper in a non-conference defeat that drops their record to 1-1-0 (0-0-0 MAC).
Despite numerous close calls and high-pressure moments, including a first-half strike off the crossbar by Kaylee Synk (North Olmsted, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) and a late shot off the right post by Madison Hurst (Wexford, Pa./Allison Park, Pa.), Eastern Michigan saw its second match of 2026 slip away in the final 10 minutes.
How It Happened
The Eagles opened Sunday with relentless offensive pressure, firing 10 shots in the first half and forcing four saves. Synk nearly put the team in front, but her 34th-minute effort struck the crossbar. Maya Marolly (Montreal, Quebec/Ecole Secondarie Des Sources) added two shots on target before halftime, but the teams went to the break tied 0-0.
After intermission, the Green and White kept up the intensity. Hurst was denied by the woodwork in the 85th minute, while Lauren Yaquinto (Northville, Mich./Northville) and Ciara Brown (Wyandanch, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West/Auburn) each forced difficult saves from the Titans goalkeeper in the second half.
Detroit Mercy converted its only shot on goal of the match in the 80th minute, as Emma Henry broke the deadlock with a low finish. The Eagles faced just one shot on target, a testament to the defensive work in front. Eastern pressed until the final whistle but could not find an equalizer in a match that left the team frustrated but encouraged by its offensive output.
