YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a twinbill with Central Michigan University in Mid-American Conference action, Friday afternoon here at the 2007 home opener at Varsity Field. CMU took game one 7-2 and the Eagles took the nightcap 9-1 in five innings. Senior Lauren Clark extended her hit streak to a career-high 10 games. In game two, senior pitcher Michelle Lloyd tossed a complete game two-hitter.
With the split EMU moves to 12-16 overall and 4-2 in the MAC, while CMU moves to 13-16 and 2-4 in league action.
In game one, Clark started the game with a single up the middle. She finished the contest 2-for-4 at the plate, moving her hit streak to nine games. Freshman Jenny Scherer accounted for both Eagle runs, with a two-run home run in the fourth. The blast was a team-high fifth of the season for Scherer.
Senior Aimee Woodrum (5-6), senior Kelly Tomczak and freshman Michelle Hletko combined for eight strikeouts in the loss.
CMU scored runs in five of the first six innings. Jacque Benedict and Kari Seddon each hit home runs for the Chippewas.
In the nightcap, Clark started the game with a shot over the fence to deep center field. The blast was the 21st of her career, extended her EMU career lead. Junior Lindsay Ritz registered a career-high three RBI.
Lloyd (5-5) threw her second game allowing two or less hits. She recorded eight strikeouts in the complete game victory today. She also threw a complete game one-hitter against Western Michigan University, March 31.
EMU posted three runs in the first. Clark’s solo shot started the rally. RBI singles by Scherer and junior Jessica Grant plated the other two Eagle runs.
The Eagles busted the game open with six runs in the second. Junior Heather Giroux started the frame with a double to center field. Walks to Clark and junior Ashley Strauss loaded the bases. An RBI single by senior Lindsay Schmid and an infield error accounted for three Eagle runs. A bases loaded double by Ritz plated the other three runs of the inning, putting the Eagles up 9-0.
A sacrifice fly in the fourth scored the Chippewas lone run.
The Eagles will return to action Tuesday, April 17 for a non-conference doubleheader with Oakland University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Varsity Field.
