YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team swept a twinbill with Oakland University Tuesday afternoon here at Varsity Field. In game one, senior Aimee Woodrum limited the Grizzlies to just one hit in a 9-0, five inning contest. Senior Lindsay Schmid hit a walk-off two-run home run in the fifth. The Eagles took the nightcap, 6-1. Senior Lauren Clark extended her hit streak to 12 games, the longest of any Eagle since the 1999 season. For the day, junior Ashley Strauss cranked out four doubles.
With the sweep EMU improves to 14-16 overall, while OU to 9-21.
On the day, Staruss and Schmid each totaled five hits. Schmid and freshman Jenny Scherer each hit home runs.
In game one, Woodrum (6-6) had a no-hitter working through four and 1/3 innings, but a bloop single to left field accounted for the Grizzlies lone hit of the contest. Woodrum recorded seven strikeouts and allow just two OU batters to reach base, a first inning walk and a fifth inning single. The Eagle batters had no trouble reaching base, as the lead-off hitter in every inning successfully reached first base on four singles and a walk. EMU plated runs in all five innings.
Strauss registered a perfect 2-for-2 game at the plate with two doubles. Schmid recorded three RBI, two hits and scored twice.
Clark opened the game with a single up the middle. An RBI double by Strauss put the Eagles up 1-0 after the first frame.
The Eagles scored two run in each inning the remainder of the game. In the second, a throwing error accounted for the first run and a sacrifice fly by junior Stephanie Sabo plated the second run. A passed ball and an RBI single by junior Heather Giroux plated both runs in the third. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Schimid and Scherer accounted for both fourth inning runs and Schmid’s two-run blast ended the contest by mercy rule.
In the nightcap, Clark, Strauss and Schmid each posted 3-for-4 games. Freshman Michelle Hletko (1-4) picked up her first collegiate win. She totaled three strikeouts in the complete game victory.
Oakland got on the board first with a lead-off solo home run by Julie Owen. EMU took the lead in the third, after a lead-off double by Strauss started a three-run rally. Staruss scored on an RBI single by Schmid. Scherer blasted a two-run home run to give EMU a 3-1 advantage.
The Eagles scored three more runs in the sixth. An RBI single by Sabo and a two-run double by Strauss accounted for the final runs of the game.
The Eagles continue their home stand Friday, April 20 with a doubleheader with Bowling Green State University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.
