Softball Sweeps Bowling Green to Snap Falcons' 10-Game Win Streak

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team swept Bowling Green State University Friday afternoon here at Varsity Field. The Eagles took game one 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel and the nightcap 2-1 with seventh inning heroics. Senior Michelle Lloyd limited the Falcons to just three hits in the complete game shutout. With the wins, EMU improves to 16-16 after a 1-11 start to the season, while the losses move BGSU to 25-8 on the season.
With the sweep EMU improves to 16-16 overall and 6-2 in league action, while BGSU falls to 25-8 and 8-4 in the MAC.
In game one, Lloyd (6-5) had a no-hitter working through the first five innings. She allowed just three hits in the contest. Lloyd recorded seven strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
Juniors Stephanie Sabo and Heather Giroux each posted two hits in the contest, while senior Lindsay Schmid blasted a double for game’s only extra base hit. Senior Lauren Clark failed to record a hit in the contest snapping her hit streak at 12 games, the longest of any Eagles since the 1999 season.
EMU posted the first threat of the game in the home half of the fourth inning. Sabo led-off the inning with a bunt single. A one-out double to left field by Schmid pitted runners and second and third. A walk to sophomore Heather Han loaded the bases. But the Eagles were unable to plate a running, keeping the game scoreless.
The Eagles took advantage of a lead-off single in the fifth, after junior Lindsay Ritz singled through the left side of the infield. Ritz advanced to second on Sabo’s second single of the game. An RBI single to right field by Strauss, put the Eagles up 1-0.
In the sixth, Dawnjene DeLong dribbled a ball just past the plate reached safely for the Falcons first hit off the game. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, but Lloyd got out of the inning without allowing a run.
Two Falcon errors and a single by Giroux loaded the bases for EMU. But a Clark rocket line out, which knocked the third baseman over, ended the inning.
After two quick outs in the seventh, BGSU loaded the bases off a walk and back-to-back singles. But Lloyd was able to induce a foul out to end the threat and the game.
During the nightcap, Sabo posted a 2-for-3 game at the plate with a double. Senior Aimee Woodrum (7-6) went the distance recording six strikeouts.
The Falcons scored the first run of the contest. Three singles in the second led to one BGSU run.
A two out rally in the sixth inning tied the contest. A single by Han and an infield error put placed runners at first and second. An RBI single to right field by Ritz knotted the game up at 1-1.
Freshman Jenny Scherer led-off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left field line. A successful sacrifice bunt by Han advanced Scherer to third with one out. Junior Jessica Grant reached on a fielder’s choice. Ritz hit a hard grounder to shortstop that the fielder booted allowing the winning run to score, ending the game.
The Eagles continue their home stand Saturday, April 21, with a single game against the University of Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Varsity Field.
