YPSILANTI, Mich. — Behind clutch hitting and strong pitching, the Eastern Michigan University softball team defeated the University of Toledo, 7-1, Saturday afternoon here at Varsity Field. Junior Ashley Strauss went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, while senior pitcher Aimee Woodrum lost her shutout bid with two outs in the final inning. With the win, EMU extends its lead atop the Mid-American Conference West Division standings and moves to 6-1 at home on the season.
With the EMU improves to 17-16 overall and 7-2 in league action, while the Rockets fall to 7-28 and 2-11 in the MAC.
Woodrum (8-6) pitched the complete game, recording five strikeouts. A two out home run in the seventh inning scored the first and only run of the game for UT. Senior Lauren Clark went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Junior Lindsay Ritz also scored two runs.
EMU scored three runs in the first inning. Clark started the Eagles off with a single up the middle. Clark advanced on a successful sacrifice bunt by junior Stephanie Sabo. Strauss doubled to the gap the left center field to score the first run of the game. Senior Lindsay Schmid reached on an RBI single to left field and advanced a base on three past balls to give the Green and White an early 3-0 lead.
Ritz led-off the fourth with a walk and later scored after two Rocket errors, extending EMU’s advantage to 4-0.
Junior Jessica Grant singled to start the sixth frame. Ritz reached on a fielder’s choice and a walk to Clark loaded the bases. Staruss cleared the bases with a double to center field, scoring three runs and putting the Eagle ahead 7-0.
The Rocket’s Brittany Robbins connected on a two-out solo home run to left field to break up Woodrum’s shutout bid in the final inning. The hit was the first of the season for Robinson.
The Eagles wrap-up their eight game home stand Sunday, April 22 with a single game against the University of Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Varsity Field. The game will also serve as Senior Day with Kayla Bluthardt, Clark, Michelle Lloyd, Lindsay Schmid, Krissy Threet, Kelly Tomczak and Woodrum each being honored approximately 15 minutes before game time.
