YPSILANTI, Mich. — Despite out-hitting the Rockets 14-8, the Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to the University of Toledo, 8-6, in nine innings in Mid-American Conference action Sunday afternoon here at Varsity Field. Today’s contest served as Senior Day with Kayla Bluthardt, Lauren Clark, Michelle Lloyd, Lindsay Schmid, Krissy Threet, Kelly Tomczak and Aimee Woodrum each being honored before game time. Lloyd tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts.                      

With the loss EMU falls to 17-17 overall and 7-3 in league action, while the Rockets improve to 8-28 and 3-11 in the MAC. The Green and White have posted a 31-8 record at home over the past three seasons.      

Lloyd (6-6) threw the first 8 and 2/3 innings. She allowed just three earned runs. Junior Ashley Strauss  went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI off a double in the seventh inning to send the game to extra-innings. Freshman Jenny Scherer cranked out a double and a triple. Clark hit her 22nd career home run.    

The Rockets scored first with a two-out solo home run off the bat of Leslie Stong, to give UT an early 1-0 lead.
     
Junior Lindsay Ritz led-off the third inning with a double off the left field wall, but a double play help keep the Eagles scores and the Rockets up 1-0.        

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until a solo home run by Alison Hess put the Rockets up 2-1 in the sixth inning. UT added another run off a home run by Andrea Wabol for the Rockets third solo home run of the game, giving Toledo a 3-1 lead.        

In the bottom of the seventh, junior Heather Giroux reached on a one-out double. An intentional walk to Clark put the tying run at first base. Strauss connected on a two-out double to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3.     

The Eagle defense came undone in the ninth inning as three errors led to five unearned Rocket runs. Alison Hess put an exclamation point on the inning with a thee-run home run, her second long ball of the game.         

Clark started the Eagles’ half of the ninth with a home run to right field. With two outs, Schmid singled to center field and scored on a triple by Scherer. An RBI single by sophomore Heather Han scored Scherer, A single by junior Jessica Grant brought the winning run to the plate, but a groundout ended the inning.      

The Eagles will be in action again Friday April 27, for a MAC West Division showdown with Ball State University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the BSU Softball Complex.
