Kristin Haynie is in her second year on the Eagles’ sidelines in 2013-14. Hayne brings a multitude of playing experience as a former WNBA and Michigan State University player.
In her first season on the recruiting trail, the Eagles were selected as the top recruiting class in the MAC and the 65th-best class in the nation, according to the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. EMU was the lone MAC institution represented inside Olsen’s top 90 ranked teams.
On the court, Haynie’s guards combined to average 35.9 points per game. Desyree Thomas saw her scoring improve from 5.4 points per game to 7.1, while Bianca Cage burst on to the scene earning All-MAC Freshman Team accolades.
A 2005 graduate of MSU who helped the Spartans make it to the 2005 NCAA National Championship game, Haynie spent five seasons in the WNBA with the Sacramento Monarchs, Atlanta Dream and Detroit Shock. She has also logged time playing professionally in Lithuania, Russia, Greece and Italy.
Her duties as an assistant at EMU include working with the guards.
The ninth pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft by the Sacramento Monarchs, Haynie played in 160 games during her WNBA career averaging 3.5 points and 1.8 assists. She was also part of the Monarchs’ 2005 WNBA Championship run in her rookie year and is the only player to have played in the NCAA finals as well as the WNBA finals in the same year.
In playing professionally, the Mason, Mich. native has been a part of two WNBA Western Conference championships (2005, 2006), a Russian Superleague Regular Season Championship (2007), a Lithuanian LMKL Regular Season Championship (2008), a Greek Cup Finalist (2009), and the Italian League All-Star Game (2012).
Haynie left MSU as the school’s all-time leader in both assists (574) and steals (346). She finished eighth in MSU history in scoring (1,199 points) and 16th in rebounding (601), and is just the fourth player in Big Ten Conference history to reach career totals of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 steals.
She was named MSU’s Player of the Year for 2004-05, after having a stellar senior season, being named Associated Press honorable mention All-American, first-team All-Big Ten, Most Outstanding Performer of the Big Ten Tournament, most outstanding performer of the NCAA’s Kansas City Regional and a member of the All-Tournament team at the Final Four. She averaged 10.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and Big Ten bests of 5.4 assists and 3.3 steals, while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, 37.7 percent from 3-point range and 82.1 percent from the free throw line.
The Mason High School product broke MSU’s single-season steals record with 117 (fifth best in Big Ten history), and was the only player in the Big Ten ranked among the league leaders in points, rebounds, assists and steals. Haynie had the school’s second-ever triple-double, posting 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 victory over Vanderbilt University.
