YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team welcomed back its 1976 College World Series Runner-Up Team as it dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Bowling Green State University in the second game of a three-game Mid-American Conference series Saturday, May 2, at Oestrike Stadium.
Eastern pitching thrived once again, allowing two runs or less for the second consecutive game for the first time since 2022. Cal Rutherford (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central), Tommy Rose (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth), Brian Henson (Huntsville, Ala./Buckhorn/Northwest-Shoals C.C.), and Landon Mueller (Fremont, Neb./Fremont/Omaha) combined to allow just two runs off five hits while striking out eight batters and walking four.
How it Happened
The Falcons struck first in the opening inning, plating a runner on a double to left field to gain the 1-0 lead.
The game was scoreless for the next six innings before the Eagles tied the contest thanks to a BGSU error. Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.) reached base off a throwing error by the third baseman, scoring Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) from third base.
With the game tied 1-1, Bowling Green broke through to take the 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth with an infield single to shortstop, scoring a runner from third base.
The Eagles were unable to match the Falcons' total in the ensuing bottom half of the ninth as they were retired in order to seal the 2-1 win for Bowling Green.
Game Notes
» Eastern's record dropped to 14-30 (8-18 MAC), and Bowling Green's improved to 17-28 (10-16 MAC).
» Nick Weaver caught three baserunners stealing, elevating his season total to 23, leading the MAC. The figure also puts him in the top 10 nationally. Weaver's three runners caught stealing tie his season high set at Little Rock, Feb. 15, and tie for the second-most in a single game in program history in the modern statistical era (1999-present).
» Tommy Rose pitched 2.2 innings, allowing no runs, his seventh scoreless outing of the season.
» Brian Henson pitched one inning, allowing zero runs and striking out two batters. This was his third scoreless outing of the season.
Historical Notes
» Eastern allowed two or fewer runs in back-to-back games for the first time since April 17-19, 2022, in a 3-1 win over Ohio and a 14-1 win over Siena Heights.
» Eastern and Bowling Green met for the 196th time as EMU holds a 113-83 record against the Falcons.
