YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team clinched a Mid-American Conference series victory over Bowling Green State University with a 7-3 win over the Falcons Sunday, May 3, at Oestrike Stadium.
Carter White (Shelby County, Ky./Shelby County/Lincoln Memorial) got the start and went a career-long 4.2 innings while Jack Angus (Darien, Ill./Montini Catholic/Stetson) (1-0) earned his first win of the season with a scoreless 1.1 innings of work. Brian Henson (Huntsville, Ala./Buckhorn/Northwest-Shoals C.C.) came on to get the final out, earning the first save of his NCAA career.
Offensively, both Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) and Kriss Sydlowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline/USC Sumpter) each drove in a pair of runs while Stecko crushed his 11th home run of the season, tying a season-long career-high.
How it Happened
Eastern Michigan struck first in the bottom of the opening frame as Stecko blasted a two-run home run to center field, driving in Bruce Jellison (Hartland, Mich./Hartland/Wabash Valley) for an early 2-0 lead. Bowling Green responded with runs in the second and fourth innings, including an RBI double, to briefly tie the contest at 2-2.
Devan Zirwas (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny/VCU) helped EMU reclaim the advantage in the fourth, coming around to score on an infield error. The game broke open in the fifth, when the Eagles loaded the bases and capitalized for four runs. Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.) was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Keegan Knupp (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) singled home another, and Sydlowski delivered a two-run single to left center for a 7-2 margin.
Bowling Green scored one run in the eighth, but were unable to match Eastern's total as the game concluded in a 7-3 victory for the Green and White.
