The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team tied for fourth place at the inaugural GameAbove Golf Invitational held March 9-10 at Rolling Hills Country Club in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., as the Eagles battled a strong field on the links-style course in the Los Angeles area. The No. 30 Eagles, who co-hosted the event with No. 2 University of Southern California on the par-72, 6,564-yard course, played well against a field of 11 teams that featured three of the top four teams in the national rankings and eight members of the top 50.
 
No. 2 USC captured the team title at 22-under 842 (283-280-279), taking the top spot on its home course by 12 strokes over No. 4 Texas A&M University, who was second at 10-under 854 (291-286-277). No. 3 University of Oregon was third at 11-over 875 (288-298-289) with Eastern (300-285-292), No. 22 University of Arizona (296-294-287), and No. 26 Southern Methodist University (288-300-289) each tying for fourth place at 13-over 877. For the second consecutive event, the Eagles finished ahead of No. 11 University of California Los Angeles as the Bruins were seventh at 19-over 883 (303-294-286).
 
Individually, No. 27 Kylie Chong of USC won medalist honors at 11-under 205 with Janae Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) leading the Eagles as she tied for 12th at 1-over 217 (77-70-70), climbing four spots in the final round for her fourth top 12 finish of the year. Leovao, ranked No. 68 in the collegiate ranks and No. 204 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), placed ahead of 11 players ranked higher on the world lists and seven on the collegiate charts while posting the 24th-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
 
Savannah de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d'enghien, Belgium/Institut de l'Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) also placed among the top 20 as she finished tied for 17th at 3-over 219 (77-70-72). The junior, ranked No. 135 collegiately and No. 264 in WAGR, saw her fourth top 20 finish of the season place her ahead of nine players ranked higher on the world chart and eight on the collegiate ledger. Similarly, Baiyok Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Lindsey Wilson) tied for 21st at 6-over 222 (72-71-79) as the No. 145 player in college and No. 165 on WAGR defeated eight players higher ranked in the world and seven on the collegiate chart.
 
Jasmine Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) tied for 27th at 8-over 224 (79-74-71) and Matilde Zocchi (Turin, Italy/Liceo Vittoria) tied for 43rd at 15-over 231 (74-77-80) to round out the five scoring players in the tournament for the Eagles. Three individuals also competed in the event, led by Angelica Holman (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy/Daytona State/Georgia), who tied for 40th at 14-over 230 (76-78-76). She was joined by Ammy Raemmuang (Phitsanulok, Thailand/St. Nicholas School), who tied for 49th at 18-over 234 (81-76-77) and Julianna Go (San Juan, Philippines/St. Jude Catholic School/King), who tied for 52nd at 21-over 237 (80-75-82).
 
Team Notes
» The 877 strokes Eastern recorded ranked as the sixth-best 54-hole team score in program history. It also marked the sixth time in six events this season the Eagles have posted a score that ranked in the program's all-time top seven.
» Eastern shot 285 in the second round to tie for the sixth-lowest single-round score in program history for the third time this season after also shooting 285 in the opening round of The Southern (Sept. 8) and the second round of the Alice & John Wallace Invitational (Feb. 15).
» The Eagles' score of 292 in the final round tied for the 27th-best single-round score in program history. To date, there have been 38 rounds of 292 or lower recorded in program history with 23 of those rounds (60.5 percent) coming in the past two seasons under Josh Brewer.
» Eastern, ranked No. 30 in the March 4 Scoreboard/Clippd rankings, defeated No. 11 UCLA for the second consecutive tournament after finishing second at the Alice & John Wallace Invitational (Feb. 14-16) with the Bruins taking third. The Eagles also tied with two teams ranked ahead of them in the GameAbove Golf Invitational as they shared fourth with No. 22 Arizona and No. 26 SMU.
» With its placement at the GameAbove Golf Invitational, Eastern has defeated five teams ranked higher than it in tournaments this year. The Eagles were receiving votes in the coaches poll (prior to the release of the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings) and took second place at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate (Oct. 6-7) with No. 25 Baylor (fourth) and No. 12 Oklahoma State (fifth) finishing behind EMU. At the Alice & John Wallace Invitational (Feb. 14-16), the No. 33 Eagles took second to finish ahead of No. 11 UCLA (third) and No. 10 Vanderbilt (fifth) before this week's higher finish against the Bruins.
 
Individual Notes
» Janae Leovao rebounded from an opening-round 77 to shoot consecutive rounds of 70 to finish at 217, which tied for the 24th-lowest score in program history. Her tie for 12th place also marked her fourth top 15 finish of the season.
» Janae Leovao came into the tournament ranked No. 68 in the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings and No. 204 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). With her finish, she placed ahead of 11 players ranked higher than her on the current world lists, including six members of the top 100 and one player in the top 15, while also defeating seven players with a higher ranking on the collegiate list.
» Savannah de Bock battled back from a slow start to shoot 219 and place tied for 17th for her fourth top 20 finish of the season. Additionally, she recorded two rounds at par or better for third tournament this year.
» Savannah de Bock, ranked No. 135/No. 264, tied for 17th to place ahead of nine players appearing higher on the world rankings list, including four members of the top 100 and one in the top 15. Additionally, she defeated eight players ranked higher on the collegiate charts.
» Baiyok Sukterm, ranked No. 145/No. 165, also defeated several highly ranked individuals as her tie for 21st placed her ahead of eight players ranked higher on the world lists, including four in the top 100 and one in the top 15, while placing ahead of seven players ranked higher on the Scoreboard/Clippd listing.
» Jasmine Leovao, ranked No. 63/No. 195, finished ahead of or tied with three players ranked ahead of her in the world rankings with all three ranked in the top 100. Those same three individuals were ranked ahead of her in the collegiate rankings ahead of the tournament as well.
» Angelica Holman, playing as an individual, recorded her lowest tournament score of the season at 14-over 230. Her previous best was the 233 she shot at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (Sept. 22-24).
