Track & Field Readies for Two-Meet Weekend

The distance athletes will compete in the GVSU Big Meet, while the rest of the team will attend the Heartland Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs will send athletes to both the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, Mich., Friday, Feb. 13, and the Heartland Invitational at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ind., Friday-Saturday, Feb. 13-14.

The distance athletes will compete in the GVSU Big Meet on Friday, while the rest of the athletes will compete in the Heartland Invitational Friday and Saturday. The GVSU Big Meet will begin at 8:30 a.m., while the Heartland Invitational will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Last Time at GVSU Big Meet
The Eagles competed in the GVSU Big Meet last season on Feb. 14. The men were led by Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College), who had bettered his MAC-best mile at that point in the season with a time of 4:01.84. Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School) turned in an eight-second mile PR, finishing second in the open mile in 4:11.38, along with Nicholas Kline (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills) who clocked a personal best 1:23.35 in the 600m.

The women saw Chloie Musta earn the sixth fastest time in program history in the 800m, running a time of 2:08.26, along with Mia Biehl (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) running a personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:17.18. Cara Weber (Union, Ky./Larry A. Ryle) and Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School) both ran personal best times in the 5,000m.

Last Time Out: Michigan Invitational
The Eagles were highlighted by four program top 10 marks and three event wins at the Michigan Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Feb. 7. On the women's side, Mariah Taylor (East Lake, Fla./East Lake) won the triple jump with a personal best leap of 12.65m (41-06.00), improving her program top 10 spot to No. 4.  Demetria Henderson (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) earned an event win with a time of 2:14.91 in the 800m. Faith Moore (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) improved her weight throw to EMU No. 4 with a personal best mark of 18.40m (60-04.50), and Savannah Breitwiser (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Central/Michigan State) earned spot No. 9 in program history in the shot put with her 13.51m (44-04.00) toss.

The men's team saw Andrew Azunque (Naples, Fla./First Baptist Academy) earn his second collegiate win with a personal best clearance of 2.00m (6-06.75) in the high jump. He was followed by Tanner Schick (Mount Dora, Fla./Mount Dora Christian Academy), who took second in the high jump with a 1.95m (6-04.75) mark. Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) earned second place in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 19.77m (64-10.50), improving his program No. 9 mark.

A Look Back: 2024-25 MAC Honors
Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla./The-Out-of-Door-Academy), was named Most Valuable Performer in the outdoor season after scoring 38 points at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 15-17. She became the 13th most valuable performer in program history and the first since Alsu Bogdanova in 2018.
