Four Event Wins and 17 Personal Bests Highlight Two-Meet Weekend

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs saw a combined total of four event wins and 17 personal best performances in their two-meet weekend, with athletes at both the Grand Valley State University Big Meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Mich., Feb. 13, and the Heartland Invitational at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 13-14.
Both Kian Wiles and Gabe Oliveira set Mid-American Conference (MAC) leading marks in the 800m and triple jump, respectively.
The distance athletes and women's thrower Aleah Johnson (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins) competed in the GVSU Big Meet, while the rest of the athletes competed in the Heartland Invitational.
All of the event wins occurred at the Heartland Invitational, with two from the men and two from the women.
How it Happened – GVSU Big Meet
The Eastern men were highlighted by a strong presence in the 800m events. Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) earned a third-place finish in the 800m Invitational with a personal best time of 1:48.85, a time that now ranks as the fourth fastest in program history, and first in the MAC. Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) ran a personal best time of 1:52.54 in the 800m open for second place, and was followed by Nicholas Kline (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills), who also ran a personal best time of 1:54.29. Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School) earned a top five finish in the mile invitational with a personal best time of 4:03.19, a seven-second improvement from his previous best time, and now ranks second in the MAC behind Wiles' time of 3:59.78.
The women were highlighted by multiple personal bests. Sophie Emin (Easton Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers) ran a personal best 2:10.96 in the 800m invitational, her third consecutive meet with a personal best time. Erika Van Loton (Garden City, Mich./Huron Valley Lutheran) ran the mile in 5:13.74, a personal best by two seconds, after her 5:15.50 mile at the Michigan Invitational, Feb. 7.
How it Happened – Heartland Invitational
The men's team was highlighted by two event wins, as Oliveira (São Paulo, Brazil/ Escola Estadual Jornalista David Nasser) won the triple jump with a personal best 15.37m (50-05.25) mark, now leading the MAC and earning rank No. 7 in the program top 10, tied with Anthony McClendon, who set the mark in 1990. Andrew Azunque (Naples, Fla./First Baptist Academy) won the open long jump with a personal best leap of 7.20m (23-07.50).
The open pole vault saw Nathan Gaspersic (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) and Sam Vesperman (Grosse Ile, Mich./Gross Ile) share third place, as they both cleared 4.39m (14-04.75).
Jamyle Anderson took third place in the 200m with a personal best time of 21.55. Lukas Ray (Lincoln Park, Mich./Wyandotte Roosevelt) finished in third in the open shot put with a toss of 16.21m (53-02.25).
The Eastern women were highlighted by two event wins. Megan Rybitski (Dayton, Ohio/Wayne) finished first in the open pole vault with a personal best clearance of 3.81m (12-06.00). The second event win came from the 4x400m relay team of Liusmar Rivas Velasquez (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier), Alba Viñals Calixto (Arinsal, Andorra/Escola Andorrana de Segona Ensenyança d'Ordino), Josephine Oloye (Iawro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School), and Demetria Henderson (Tampa, Fla./Freedom), who ran a time of 3:42.73.
The women also saw multiple top-five finishes. In the jumping events, Mariah Taylor (East Lake, Fla./East Lake) earned second place in the triple jump with a 12.55m (41-02.25) mark, and Ashtan Winfrey (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric Early College) earned third in the long jump with a leap of 5.71m (18-08.75).
Nicolette Lewis (Fairburn, Ga./Hoover) had a toss of 17.29m (56-08.75) to finish fourth in the open weight throw. Jordynn Young (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) ran a time of 7.52 in the 60m finals for fifth place.
Tatyana Green (Troy, Ohio/Troy) threw personal bests in both events, with a toss of 14.57m (47-09.75) in the weight throw, and 12.80m (42-00.00) in the shot put.
