Eagles one of four teams with two wins in MAC play following weekend results

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Mackenzie Blackwell netted five goals while the defense stood tall to lift the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team to a 13-8 Mid-American Conference win over visiting University of Detroit Mercy Sunday, April 6, at Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (6-6, 2-2 MAC) raced out a 13-3 lead before settling for the five-point win as they posted their third consecutive win against the Titans (5-6, 2-1 MAC).
How It Happened
The game was scoreless for just over the first four minutes of play before the Titans broke the stalemate for a 1-0 lead. The Eagles struck back just over one minute later as Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) tallied her first of the day with 9:45 remaining. After the defenses stood tall for much of the quarter, the Eagles were able to net two scores in the final 33 seconds of the stanza for a 3-1 lead. With 33 seconds to play, Katheryn Wilson (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) score on a free-position shot before EMU won the draw and charged before Blackwell scored her second.
In the second, the EMU offense found its rhythm as it scored the first three goals of the quarter and seven total for a 10-2 lead at halftime. Amber Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) scored on the woman-up advantage on a feed from Wilson before Blackwell completed her hat trick on a pass from Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School). Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) got into the scoring as she tallied on a pass from Emerson Henry (Ashburn, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) to make it 6-1. Following a UDM goal with 5:41 to play, the Eagles would close the quarter on a four-goal run, with Henry, off a pass from Am. Alderman, getting the streak started. Blackwell added her fourth on another feed from Grollman before she was the scorer on the next two as Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto) found Grollman for goals at 24 seconds and seven seconds remaining.
The Titans opened the third with a goal to halt the host's run before EMU would score the next three goals to close out the third with a 13-3 lead. Blackwell scored her fifth on a pass from Schwab on the woman-up advantage before Henry added her second. The final goals game with 1:42 to play in the third as Roya Khaleeli (Rancho Palo Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) scored on the woman-up advantage.
The fourth belonged to the visitors as they out-scored EMU, 5-0, with the first four goals coming on the woman-up advantage. Despite the run, the Eagles were able to hold on for the 13-8 win and hand the Titans their first league loss of the year.

» Mackenzie Blackwell scored five goals to tie for the seventh-most in a single game at EMU and the fourth-highest total against a MAC foe as she tallied five or more goals in a game for the sixth time in her career. Blackwell, who tied her season tie set Feb. 27 at Gardner-Webb, tallied eight shots, all of which were on goal, to record five total points, which tied for the seventh-most in a single game against a MAC foe.
» Mackenzie Blackwell recorded her 10th hat trick of the season and the 27th of her career. The 10 hat tricks this season ties her own school record set last year as she is now the only player to not only record double-digit hat tricks in a single season once, but also in multiple campaigns. Blackwell has scored 42 goals this year, leaving her seven shy of tying her own record for single-season goals set last year with 49.
» Mackenzie Blackwell's five goals are the most she has scored against the Titans in the four games she has played. She has tallied 15 total goals against Detroit Mercy after scoring three on the road and four at home in 2023 before adding three more last year in Detroit.
» Tracy Grollman finished the game with two goals and two assists for a season-high four points. Her first goal of the game, which was the first of two consecutive goals she scored, stood as the game-winning strike, marking her first career game-winner.
» Avery Schwab, who assisted on one of Tracy Grollman's goals, joined Grollman on the single-game MAC list in a tie for fifth with two assists.
» Emerson Henry posted 11 draw controls in the game which stands the second-highest total of her career after recording 11 against Youngstown State earlier this season (March 23). Henry, who had three points on two goals and one assist, tied for the third-highest total in a game against a MAC foe in program history with her wins in the draw circle.
» Maddie Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) posted 11 saves, seven ground balls, and three caused turnovers in the game. Her ground ball total ties for the second-most in a game against a MAC team and fourth in all game and marks the third time this year she has finished a game with seven, including the opener with San Diego State (Feb. 15) and the MAC opener at Robert Morris (March 16). Her 11 saves are the third-most in a MAC game and her second-highest total against a league foe after tallying 13 at Robert Morris.
» Two sets of sisters competed in the game, including the Aldermans (Abby and Amber) for EMU and the Schwabs, which featured Avery Schwab for EMU and younger sister Sophia Schwab for UDM.

» The game saw Maddie Dugan lead the Eagles to the win one season after guiding the Titans to the championship game of the MAC Tournament in her lone season at the helm. Dugan was named the 2024 MAC Coach of the Year for her efforts at UDM
» With the results posted around the league this weekend, Akron leads the way at 3-1 with a log jam of two-win times behind the Zips, including both Detroit Mercy and Robert Morris at 2-1 and EMU and Central Michigan at 2-2. The losses for UDM and RMU were their first to season in MAC play.
» The Eagles improved to 3-1 overall in the all-time series with the Titans and have won three consecutive games. The wins mark the most against a single opponent in program history while also marking the first three-game winning streak against one team for EMU since it began play in 2023.
» Eastern has allowed single-digit goal totals in back-to-back home games and back-to-back conference games for the first time in program history after allowing just six to Youngstown State (March 23) in the last home MAC contest. » The team tied a Scicluna Field record with three woman-up goals scored in the game. It marked the fifth time EMU has tallied three goals on the advantage in an outdoor home game.
