Baseball Drops Friday Tilt Against Albany

The result sets up a rubber match for the series finale tomorrow, Saturday, April 19, 1 p.m.
ALBANY, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was shutout, 3-0, in the second of three games against the University at Albany Great Danes, at Varsity Field, Friday, April 18.
The result sets up a rubber match in the series finale tomorrow, Saturday, April 19, 1 p.m.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by Harrison Travis (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Soddy Daisy/Carson-Newman) and Brendan Kleiman (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Frederick C.C.) who each recorded two hits.
Freshman right-hander Colin Milligan (Delaware, Ohio/Delaware Hayes) (0-2) got the start on the mound and posted career highs with four innings pitched and five strikeouts despite being tagged with the loss. Albany's Dylan Banner (4-3) was credited with the win.
After the result, Eastern's record shifted to 15-18 (9-9 Mid-American Conference), while Albany's improved to 11-22 (3-9 America East).
How it Happened
Pitching and defense shined in the early stages as the game was scoreless through three innings with just one hit between both teams.
Albany broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, scoring one run off a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Sophomore right-hander Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley/Akron) entered the game to relieve Milligan to start the fifth inning. Milligan exited after a career-long 4.0 innings on the mound while punching-out a career-best five batters and allowing just one earned run off two hits.
The Great Danes added two more runs in the fifth inning, with one coming off an RBI single and the other off a throwing error from the EMU catcher.
Senior right-hander Dom Anderson (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown) came in to relieve Gillies to start the bottom of the seventh. Gillies left the game after allowing one earned run off two hits while striking out and walking one batter.
Anderson proceeded to retire the side in order in the seventh and allowed just one of his seven batters faced to reach in the appearance, leaving the game within reach for the EMU offense.
The aforementioned offense threatened in the ninth as Devan Zirwas (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny/VCU) and Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) each reached base with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate.
The Eagles were unable to mount a comeback as the game ended in a 3-0 win for Albany.

» Eastern out-hit its opponent for the 20th time this season. It is 13-7 when doing so.
» Kleiman and Travis each had multi-hit games. It marked Kleiman's 10th of the season and Travis' sixth.
» Giano Zuccaro (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea Midpark/Charleston) worked multiple walks for the third time this season and second consecutive game as he also walked twice in Thursday's 15-6 win over the Great Danes.
