Track & Field Sees Three Individual Champions Crowned On Final Day of MAC Indoor Championships, Finishes Third

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field programs saw three student-athletes earn individual Mid-American Conference Championships as both programs concluded the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships with third-place finishes inside Bowen Field House Saturday, March 1.
The men saw two individual MAC titles as the distance crew soared with Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) winning the mile in 4:11.90 and Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) claiming gold in the 800m in 1:52.40. Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla./The-Out-of-Door-Academy) won the 200m dash for the second consecutive season, setting a MAC Indoor Championships record in 23.74.
Both Eastern programs finished third as the men's squad scored 120 points while the women put up 77. The University of Akron finished first on the men's side with 164 points, and Bowling Green State University claimed the women's title, posting 95 points.
How it Happened – Men
The Eastern men earned five top-two finishes on the day, two of which were first-place outings from Wiles and McCoy as the duo combined for 28 points throughout the contest. McCoy's 800m was just one of two top-three finishes for EMU. Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School) placed third in 1:53.48 to cap a 16-point event.
The Eagles grabbed 15 points in the 400m finals, led by Bamidele Ajayi (Eikiti State, Nigeria/Metropolitan International College/Lenoir-Rhyne) and Gabe Singh (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview/Oakland), who placed second and third, respectively. Tajay Roberts (Sunrise, Fla./Dillard) added one point, finishing sixth in 49.15.
Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Nebraska) scored eight points and earned his second medal of the meet via his second-place showing in the triple jump with a 15.39m bound, a mark that stands as an indoor personal best and fifth in program history. In total, he scored 18 points after winning the long jump and posting 10 points Friday.
Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) placed second in the high jump with a mark of 2.08m (6-09.75), an event where the Eagles scored 11 points as Lucky Fiaku (Nimo, Nigeria/Busy International Secondary) and Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) added three points with fifth and sixth place finishes, respectively.
Samuel Jeffery (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley Secondary) and Cason Doolittle (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty Benton) combined for eight points in the heptathlon. Jeffery placed third, scoring six with 4,798 heptathlon points and Doolittle slotted fifth, earning two with 4,645 points.
Eastern ended the meet on a high note with a silver-medal finish in the 4x400m relay. Roberts, Ajayi, Shelton Bass (Warner Robbins, Ga./Houston County/Alderson Broaddus), and Singh ran the distance in 3:18.37 for eight points, bringing the Eagles' total to 120, a figure that earned them third.
How it Happened – Women
Walkes scored 18 points on the second day of competition, 10 of which came from her meet-record run in the 200m dash finals, earning gold for the second consecutive year in 23.74. She went on to place second in the 60m dash finals in 7.39 for eight more points. Walkes performances marked her third straight season earning All-MAC honors as she did so in both the indoor and outdoor season in 2023-24.
Josephine Oloye (Iwaro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School/Tayelolu Memorial) scored eight points as the team's lone representative in the 400m dash finals, she placed second in 54.27 for the second All-MAC performance of her indoor career.
Distance wise, Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac) finished second in the 800m finals in 2:09.11 for an All-MAC Second Team nod, Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) scored six points and placed third in the mile finals in 4:47.91 in just her second meet of the season.
In the field, Mariia Yelanska (Dnipro, Ukraine) and Kyra Buffen (Columbus, Ga./Buford/Benedict) combined to score nine points in the triple jump. Yelanska wrote her name into the EMU indoor top 10 with a 12.35m (40-06.25) leap for a fourth-place finish, ranking 10th in program history. Buffen followed in fifth, leaping 12.18m (39-11.50) for four points.
Due to injury, the Eagles did not finish the 4x400m relay and concluded the meet with 77 points.

The indoor season will conclude with the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday-Saturday, March 14-15, hosted by the city of Virginia Beach, Va., at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. A list of meet participants will be available Tuesday, March 4. The indoor season will conclude with the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday-Saturday, March 14-15, hosted by the city of Virginia Beach, Va., at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. A list of meet participants will be available Tuesday, March 4. Should no Eagles make the cut, the next time they will be in action would be in the outdoor season, as they are set to open the outdoor portion of the schedule with the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational & Multis, and the Raleigh Relays, March 27-29.
