Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season with Multiple MAC-Best Marks

The two programs combined for 12 personal bests and five program top-10 marks

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University track & field programs kicked off the 2025 outdoor campaign with multiple MAC-best marks at three different meets across the country, with student-athletes at the Bobcat Invitational, hosted by Texas State University, the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University, and the Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin Thursday-Saturday, March 27-29.
 
The Eastern women posted two top-three finishes while the two programs combined for 12 personal-best marks, with the men posting eight and the women grabbing four, and five program top-10 marks as the women earned three and the men secured two.
 
How it Happened – Women at Bobcat Invitational
Senior Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla./The-Out-of-Door-Academy) ran a personal best 23.53 200-meter, which ranks second in the MAC, sixth in EMU laurels, and 29th in the NCAA. Kyra Buffen's (Columbus, Ga./Buford/Benedict) jump of 12.06m (39-06.75) slotted her 16th. Junior Micah Martin's (Clinton Township, Mich./L'anse Creuse) high jump of 1.71m (5-07.25) was good for 29th in the NCAA this season while also ranking third in the MAC. Erica King's javelin throw of 39.98m (131-02) is the eighth-best in program history.
 
How it Happened – Men at Bobcat Invitational & Multi
Freshman Michael Hawkins (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical/Michigan State) and Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Nebraska) turned in Mid-American Conference-best in the 400m hurdles and long jump. Hawkins ran a 54.48 and Thompson jumped 7.34m (24-01.00). Hawkins also had the MAC's second-best time in the 110m hurdles with a 14.42. Sophomore Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) threw the hammer 58.63m (192-04).
 
How it Happened – Women at Raleigh Relays
Senior Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of the Hague) highlighted the women at the Raleigh Relays, running the 5000m in a career-best 16:12.80, good for fifth-best in program history. Senior Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) completed the 3000m steeplechase in 11:08.96.
 
How it Happened – Men at Raleigh Relays
The men put together strong performances in both the 800m and 1500m races, with junior Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) turning in a personal best and MAC-leading 1:49.90. Sophomore Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Brisbane, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School) turned in a personal-best in both the 800m (1:51.16) and 1500m (3:49.22). Junior Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) finished as the top Eagle in the 1500m with EMU's 10th-best time in program history while also marking a personal best in 3:43.43.
 
How it Happened – Women at Texas Relays
The Eagles had a strong showing in the jumps, as Martin finished second in the High Jump B Final with a mark of 1.68m (5-06.00). Buffen's triple jump performance of 12.60m (41-04.25) is the best in the conference this young season.
 
How it Happened – Men at Texas Relays
Senior Gabe Singh (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview/Oakland) turned in the top two times in the MAC in the 400m hurdles this season, qualifying for the final with a 51.35 before finishing in seventh with a 52.16. The 51.35 qualifying time is also good for seventh-best in EMU laurels. Hawkins' 400m hurdle time of 54.19 stands as the best in the MAC.
